Qaraqosh

Nīnawá, Iraq

Why visit Qaraqosh?

Qaraqosh (Arabic: قره قوش, Syriac: ܒܝܬ ܟܘܣܝܐ, also known as Bakhdida) is a town in the Nineveh Plains of Nīnawá Governorate, northern Iraq, about 30 km southeast of Mosul. It is the largest Christian town in Iraq, predominantly Assyrian Syriac Catholic and Chaldean Catholic. Qaraqosh was under ISIS occupation from August 2014 to October 2016, during which the population was forced to flee, and churches, homes, and businesses were systematically destroyed. Since liberation, the town has become a powerful symbol of resilience, with extensive reconstruction of churches and homes funded by international donations and the diaspora. The town has a strong community spirit and a reviving cultural scene. Climate: hot summers, mild winters. Spring is the best time.
