Mandali

Diyālá, Iraq

Why visit Mandali?

Mandali (Arabic: مندلي, Kurdish: مەندەلی) is a town in eastern Diyālá Governorate, Iraq, situated about 50 km east of Baladruz near the Iranian border. It lies at the foot of the Hamrin Mountains, where the Diyala plain meets the Zagros foothills. Mandali has a mixed population of Arabs, Kurds, and Turkmen and a history as a border trading post. The town suffered significant damage during the Iran–Iraq War of the 1980s due to its proximity to the frontier, but has slowly rebuilt. The surrounding orchards produce pomegranates, citrus, and dates. The climate is milder than the central Iraqi plain due to the higher elevation; spring and autumn are the best visiting seasons.
