Kohgīlūyeh va Bowyer Aḩmad (also spelled Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad) is a mountainous province in southwestern Iran, nestled within the Zagros Mountains. Known locally as "Boyer-Ahmad," it is one of Iran's least-touristed yet most scenically rewarding provinces, with deep river gorges, alpine meadows, and forests that remain largely untouched by mass tourism. The provincial capital, Yasuj, sits at approximately 1,800 meters above sea level and serves as the main gateway to the region's natural wonders.
The province is home to several distinct ethnic communities, including Lur, Bakhtiari, and Qashqai peoples, each contributing unique traditions, dialects, and crafts to the cultural tapestry. The landscape shifts dramatically from the snow-capped peaks of the Zagros to the warm lowlands near the Persian Gulf foothills, creating a diversity of ecosystems that supports everything from oak and cherry forests to semi-arid plains. For travelers seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-path Iranian experience, this province offers unspoiled nature and genuine hospitality.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (April to June) is the ideal time to visit, when wildflowers blanket the highlands and the weather is mild and pleasant for trekking. The meltwater from winter snows fills rivers and waterfalls, making the scenery at its most dramatic. Early autumn (September to October) also offers comfortable temperatures and golden foliage in the oak forests.
Summer can be warm in the lower elevations but remains pleasantly cool in the mountains, making it a viable escape from the heat of the lowlands. Winters bring heavy snowfall to the highlands, closing some mountain roads but creating opportunities for winter sports in areas like Sisakht.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Yasuj is the transportation hub of the province, connected to Tehran by road (approximately 550 km, roughly 8-9 hours by car) and served by domestic flights. Inter-city travel within the province relies primarily on buses and shared taxis (savari). The main roads connecting Yasuj to Dogonbadan, Dehdasht, and Sisakht are paved but winding through mountain terrain, so travel times are longer than distances suggest.
Renting a car is recommended for exploring remote villages and trailheads, though road conditions can be challenging on secondary routes. Local guides in Yasuj can arrange transportation to specific hiking areas and villages.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
The cuisine of Kohgīlūyeh va Bowyer Aḩmad reflects its pastoral heritage and mountain geography. Signature dishes include kalam polo (cabbage rice), a hearty dish flavored with herbs and sometimes meat; boz ghormeh (stewed goat), slow-cooked with dried limes and herbs; and various ash (thick herbal soups) that vary by season. Fresh dairy products — particularly local cheese and yogurt — are staples, and mountain honey from wildflowers is prized.
In Yasuj and larger towns, traditional restaurants serve these regional dishes alongside standard Iranian fare. In villages, accepting an invitation to share a meal with a local family is the best way to experience the authentic flavors of the region. Bread baked in tanoor (clay ovens) and fresh herbs are always part of the table.
What is the culture like?
The province celebrates Nowruz (Persian New Year) with particular enthusiasm, including traditional Luri and Bakhtiari dances, bonfires, and communal gatherings that last for the full thirteen-day holiday. The Chaharshanbe Suri (Festival of Fire) on the eve of Nowruz is especially vibrant, with jumping over bonfires a communal tradition.
Local crafts include traditional Luri weaving (kilims and carpets with distinctive geometric patterns), woodcarving, and basket-weaving. Music is an integral part of life, with the dotar (a two-stringed lute) and sorna (a double-reed instrument) accompanying folk songs and dances at celebrations.
