Darreh Shahr
Īlām, Iran
Why visit Darreh Shahr?
Darreh Shahr sits in northeastern Ilam Province in a fertile valley of the Seymareh river, surrounded by wooded Zagros hills. Just outside town lies the Darreh Shahr Ancient City (also known as Madaktu or Seymareh), a roughly 200-hectare ruin field from the late Sassanid era, believed to be built over the remains of the older Elamite capital of Madaktu. The city once held an estimated 5,000 houses with clay-pipe water distribution and underground sewers; visible remains include arches, domed ceilings, and old streets. It was destroyed by a major earthquake around 950 AD and never rebuilt. Darreh Shahr's archaeological museum — the only one of its kind in western Iran — holds around 300 artifacts spanning the Achaemenid, Sassanid, Safavid, and Qajar eras.
