Desert National Park

Why visit Desert National Park?

Desert National Park (Hindi: मरुस्थलीय राष्ट्रीय उद्यान) is one of India's largest protected areas, covering roughly 3,162 sq km of the Thar Desert in the far west of Rajasthan, spread across the Jaisalmer and Barmer districts near the India–Pakistan border. Established in 1980–81, it protects a fragile arid ecosystem of shifting sand dunes, gravel plains, rocky outcrops and salt-lake bottoms — a landscape that looks barren but supports surprisingly rich and specialised wildlife.

The park's flagship species is the great Indian bustard, one of the world's most endangered birds, for which the reserve is a critical stronghold. It is also a haven for desert wildlife: chinkara (Indian gazelle), desert fox, Bengal fox, desert cat, spiny-tailed lizard, and many raptors and migratory birds in winter, including harriers, eagles and vultures around the seasonal wetland of Gadisar and other waterpoints. The park also preserves dramatic geological and even fossil features — petrified wood and dinosaur-era fossils have been found in the area.

The best time to visit is November to February, when desert days are cool and migratory birds are present; the hot months (April–June) are extreme and best avoided. Visits require permits from the forest department in Jaisalmer, as much of the park lies in a sensitive border zone.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Jaisalmer Airport (JSA), about 40 km from the park, with limited seasonal civilian flights; many travellers instead fly to Jodhpur (JDH), about 320 km away, with broader connections, and continue by road or rail to Jaisalmer.

By Train

The nearest railhead is Jaisalmer railway station, about 40 km from the park, connected to Jodhpur, Jaipur and Delhi (the overnight Delhi–Jaisalmer Express is popular). From Jaisalmer, hired vehicles reach the park area. Book ahead via IRCTC in winter peak season.

By Car / Road

The park is reached from Jaisalmer (about 40 km, 1 hour) via the road toward Sam. From Jodhpur it is about 320 km (5.5 hours); from Barmer the southern reaches are accessible by desert roads. A hired 4x4 with a local guide is the practical way to enter, as tracks within the park are sandy and remote. Permits must be arranged in Jaisalmer first.

The park is explored by 4x4 jeep with a local guide and a forest permit — there is no public transport inside, and the terrain of dunes and sandy tracks demands a capable vehicle. Many visitors arrange a half- or full-day jeep safari through a Jaisalmer operator or desert camp, combining wildlife with the Sam and Khuri dunes. Some areas near the border are off-limits without special clearance. Carry plenty of water and start early to catch wildlife at dawn.

What are the things to do?

  • Great Indian bustard habitat — the open grassland-desert tracts where this rare bird may be sighted; a highlight for serious birders.

  • Sand dunes — the great dunes at Sam and Khuri on the park's fringes, classic Thar scenery.

  • Sudasari — a core area within the park known as a focus for bustard conservation.

  • Akal Wood Fossil Park — near the route to the park, preserving 180-million-year-old petrified tree trunks.

  • Desert wildlife — chinkara, desert and Bengal foxes, desert cats, raptors and wintering migratory birds around the waterpoints.

  • Take a 4x4 desert wildlife safari in search of the great Indian bustard, chinkara and desert fauna.

  • Birdwatch in winter for raptors, harriers and migratory species.

  • Combine the visit with a camel safari and overnight desert camp at Sam or Khuri.

  • See the Akal Wood Fossil Park and the park's geological features.

  • Photograph the dunes and desert landscape at sunrise and sunset.

Where to eat?

There are no restaurants inside the park; meals are taken in Jaisalmer or at desert camps near Sam and Khuri, which serve traditional Rajasthani fare. Recommendations:

  • Desert camp dinners at Sam/Khuri — Rajasthani thalis with folk music (mid-range).
  • Jaisalmer restaurants such as rooftop eateries near the fort for Rajasthani and Indian dishes (budget–mid).
  • Carry packed food and ample water for time spent in the park itself. Vegetarian and Jain food is widely available in Jaisalmer.

Where to drink?

There is no service within the park — carry plenty of bottled or filtered water, as the desert is dehydrating. In Jaisalmer and at the desert camps, masala chai, lassi and fresh juices are standard; some camps and hotels serve beer and spirits where licensed. Avoid uncovered street ice, and never set out into the desert without sufficient water.

Where to stay?

  • Budget: guesthouses in Jaisalmer, 40 km away, from roughly ₹500–1,500, often with desert-safari packages.
  • Mid-range: desert camps at Sam and Khuri with tents and folk-music evenings — roughly ₹2,000–6,000 per night including meals and activities.
  • Upscale / heritage: luxury desert camps such as SUJÁN The Serai and the resort Suryagarh Jaisalmer on the fringe of the desert — typically ₹20,000 and well upward.

What should you buy?

The park itself has no markets; shopping is done in nearby Jaisalmer, famous for embroidered and mirror-work textiles, camel-leather goods, silver tribal jewellery and carved sandstone crafts. Desert camps and villages on the fringe sometimes sell local handicrafts directly. Bargaining is the norm in Jaisalmer's bazaars. Buy water and supplies in town before heading into the desert.

Where to go next?
