Why visit Sunabeda?

Sunabeda is a planned township in the Koraput district of southern Odisha, set high in the Eastern Ghats near the borders of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Sometimes called the "Kashmir of Odisha", it is one of the coolest parts of the state and a pleasant retreat for summer-season travellers. The town spreads across roughly 10 km² and was built around Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which operates an aircraft engine plant here; most of its residents are connected directly or indirectly with HAL.

Because it was purpose-built, Sunabeda is unusually neat and well organised — a planned grid of tree-lined streets, generous green spaces, evergreen woods and good drainage, quite unlike the unplanned sprawl of most Indian towns its size. Take a road in almost any direction and within minutes you reach the foothills of the Eastern Ghats, so the township is ringed with easy picnic spots and short walks into the hills.

Thanks to its elevation, Sunabeda enjoys a cool, comfortable climate and is at its best as a hot-season escape; winters (November to February) are crisp and pleasant, summers far milder than the Odisha plains, and the monsoon (July to September) green and atmospheric. It is most rewarding as a calm, scenic base for exploring the Koraput hill country rather than a destination with major sights of its own.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Visakhapatnam (VTZ) in Andhra Pradesh, about 187 km away, with the drive climbing through the Eastern Ghats. Other airports within reach are Raipur (RPR), about 405 km, and Bhubaneswar (BBI), about 487 km. From Visakhapatnam, taxis and shared cabs run up to Koraput and Sunabeda.

By Train

There is no major railway station in Sunabeda itself. The principal railhead for the area is Koraput, the major station within about a 200 km radius, with trains including the Hirakhand Express from Bhubaneswar, the Howrah–Jagdalpur train and the Visakhapatnam–Kirandul passenger. From Koraput, frequent buses and taxis run to Sunabeda. Damanjodi is a smaller nearby station. Many travellers prefer to alight at Vizianagaram, Bobbili or Visakhapatnam and continue by bus or taxi (2–6 hours).

By Car / Road

Sunabeda is well linked by road. Visakhapatnam is about 187–214 km away depending on the route (via Pottangi and Salur, or via Araku and Paderu); Vizianagaram is about 127 km via Pottangi and Salur; Rayagada about 129 km via Koraput. Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh is around 115 km. Bhubaneswar is about 484 km. Frequent taxi services run from Vizianagaram, Bobbili, Visakhapatnam, Jagdalpur, Koraput and Rayagada; the ghat roads are scenic but winding.

Sunabeda is a compact, planned township that is pleasant to explore on foot, with autorickshaws available for longer hops and trips to the surrounding picnic spots. Frequent buses and shared taxis connect it with Koraput, about 20 km away, and with Damanjodi. To explore the waterfalls, dams and hill viewpoints scattered across the Koraput district, hiring a car with a driver for the day is the most practical option, as public transport to remote sites is sparse. Agree fares in advance.

What are the things to do?

  • HAL township and surroundings — the orderly, green planned town is itself part of the appeal; tree-lined avenues, parks and the backdrop of the Eastern Ghats make for relaxed strolls.

  • Naval armament depot (Sunabeda) — a defence installation in the area; it is a restricted facility and not open to visitors, but it is part of the town's identity.

  • Picnic spots in the foothills — numerous easy picnic and walking spots lie within minutes of the township where the streets meet the foothills of the Eastern Ghats.

  • Walk into the foothills — the township's edges run straight into the Eastern Ghats, with short walks and picnic outings the everyday pastime.

  • Day trips into the Koraput hills — use Sunabeda as a cool, comfortable base for excursions to Deomali peak, the Duduma and Bagra waterfalls, the Kolab Dam and the Gupteswar cave shrine.

  • Drive the ghat roads — the scenic mountain roads radiating from Sunabeda, threading sandalwood forest and hairpin bends, are an experience in themselves.

Where to eat?

Sitting close to the Andhra Pradesh border, Sunabeda has a varied food culture for its size — you will find traditional South Indian, North Indian, Chinese and tandoori cooking. The town is especially known for its evening and morning snacks.

  • Evening and morning snacks — samosas, chaat, pani puri and similar street items are a Sunabeda speciality, alongside local sweets, sold at stalls and small eateries.
  • South Indian eateries — dosa, idli and other South Indian staples are widely available given the proximity to Andhra Pradesh.
  • Hotel and lodge restaurants — local lodges serve standard North Indian, Chinese and tandoori fare; vegetarian options are plentiful.

Where to drink?

There is no notable bar or café scene; Sunabeda is a quiet township. Tea stalls and snack vendors are the social hubs, especially in the mornings and evenings. Stick to bottled mineral water, which is widely available, and avoid untreated tap water. Tender coconut water and chai are the everyday refreshments.

Where to stay?

  • Budget: the Odisha Tourism Panthika guest house, Sunabeda (☏ +91 6853 220310) offers very inexpensive non-AC double rooms around ₹150; reserve via the tourist officer at Koraput.
  • Mid-range: the NAC Guest House, Sunabeda (☏ +91 6853 220315) provides simple rooms; mid-range hotel choice within the township is limited, and many travellers base themselves in nearby Koraput.

What should you buy?

Sunabeda is a residential township rather than a shopping destination, with everyday markets serving its HAL community. For tribal handicrafts — terracotta, dhokra metalwork, hand-woven textiles and basketry — the weekly markets and craft shops of the wider Koraput district, and the Parab tribal festival held at Koraput each November, are the places to look. Bargaining is normal at local markets.

Where to go next?

  • Koraput (about 20 km) — the district's commercial and cultural centre, with the Jagannath Temple, Tribal Museum and the November Parab festival.
  • Damanjodi (nearby) — site of the NALCO alumina refinery, drawing bauxite from the Panchpatmali hills.
  • Jeypore (about 45 km) — a town with feudal heritage and a lively market.
  • Machkund (Duduma) (in the deep forest south of Koraput) — a dramatic 175 m waterfall and hydro-power site.
  • Jagdalpur (about 115 km, in Chhattisgarh) — gateway to the Bastar region's waterfalls and tribal culture.
  • Visakhapatnam (about 187 km) — the nearest major coastal city, with beaches and an airport.
