Bannerghatta National Park

Karnātaka, India

Why visit Bannerghatta National Park?

Bannerghatta National Park lies just south of Bangalore, about 22 km from the city centre, making it one of the most accessible wildlife destinations in India and an immensely popular day trip for Bengaluru residents. Established in 1970, it combines a national park with a zoo, a safari park, a butterfly park and one of the country's best-known elephant and bear rescue and rehabilitation centres. While not a wilderness reserve on the scale of Bandipur or Nagarhole, it offers an easy and family-friendly introduction to Karnataka's wildlife within reach of the city.

The park protects deciduous forest in the rocky terrain south of Bangalore and supports leopards, sloth bears, elephants and deer, with rescued animals housed in its rehabilitation centres. Thanks to Bangalore's mild climate, it is pleasant to visit year-round, though the cooler, drier months of October to February are most comfortable. The park is closed on Tuesdays.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Bangalore's Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) is about 60 km away, roughly 1.5–2 hours by road through the city. From the airport, take a taxi or travel via the city.

By Train

There is no station at the park. The nearest railheads are in Bangalore (KSR Bengaluru City Junction, about 25 km); from the city, continue by road, bus or cab.

By Car / Road

Bannerghatta is about 22 km south of central Bangalore, around 1 to 1.5 hours by road depending on traffic. BMTC city buses run from Bangalore (including from Majestic and other points) to Bannerghatta, and app-based cabs and autos make the trip easily. It is a straightforward self-drive or cab day trip from the city.

Within the park, the headline attraction — the safari (the "Grand Safari" / Wilderness safari) — is done in park-operated buses or jeeps through fenced enclosures housing herbivores, lions, tigers and bears. The zoo, butterfly park and other sections are explored on foot. From Bangalore, a cab or BMTC bus reaches the gate; once inside, follow the park's bus and walking circuits. There is no need for a private vehicle inside the complex.

What are the things to do?

  • Grand Safari (Wilderness Safari) — a bus or jeep tour through enclosures for lions, tigers (including white tigers), bears and herbivores.
  • Bannerghatta Zoo (Biological Park) — a well-regarded zoo with a wide range of Indian and exotic animals.
  • Butterfly Park — India's first such park, with a domed conservatory and a museum.
  • Elephant and sloth-bear rescue centres — home to rescued animals, run with wildlife NGOs.
  • Prehistoric / nature trails and the surrounding hills — light walks in the rocky forest terrain.

The main activities are the wildlife safari, exploring the zoo and butterfly park, and visiting the elephant and bear rescue centres — all especially popular with families and children. Photography, gentle nature walks and birdwatching round out a visit. As a half-day or full-day escape from Bangalore, it pairs well with the temples and resorts in the southern outskirts of the city.
