Doda
Jammu and Kashmīr, India
Why visit Doda?
Doda is a town and district headquarters in the Chenab Valley region of the Jammu Division, set on the slopes above the Chenab River in the mountains of south-eastern Jammu and Kashmir. It is the principal town of a rugged, sparsely visited belt that includes Bhaderwah and Kishtwar, and serves mainly as an administrative and trade centre for the surrounding highland villages. The region is culturally distinct from both the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu plains, with a mix of Kashmiri, Dogra, Gujjar and Bakerwal communities.
For travellers, Doda is a base and waypoint for the scenic Chenab Valley circuit rather than a major sight in itself. Nearby Bhaderwah — often called "Mini Kashmir" — with its meadows, lakes and pine forests is the area's headline attraction, and the high pastures of the district draw a small but growing number of trekkers. The terrain is dramatic, with steep mountain roads following the Chenab gorge.
The climate is temperate-to-alpine depending on altitude: summers (April–September) are pleasant and the best time to visit, while winters are cold with snow at higher elevations. Mountain roads can be disrupted by landslides in the monsoon and by snow in winter.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
The nearest airport is Jammu Airport (IATA: IXJ), about 190 km south-west. From Jammu, continue to Doda by road (shared taxi or bus). Srinagar airport is a longer alternative via the Kashmir Valley.
By Train
The nearest major railhead is Jammu Tawi (about 190 km), on the national network with connections across India. Udhampur station is somewhat closer. From the railhead, travel onward to Doda by road.
By Car / Road
Doda is reached by road from Jammu (~190 km, 7–8 hr) via Udhampur, Batote and the Chenab Valley highway, and from Kishtwar to the east. Shared Sumo taxis and buses serve the route. The mountain roads are winding and slow, and prone to landslides in the rains; allow extra time.
Within the town, walking and auto-rickshaws cover most needs. Shared Sumo taxis and local buses link Doda with Bhaderwah, Kishtwar and outlying villages. For the high meadows and remote valleys you will need a hired jeep, as public transport thins out quickly beyond the main roads.

- Budget: town dhabas serving rajma-chawal and mutton curry for under ₹200.
Where to drink?
Noon chai (pink salt tea) and ordinary masala chai are the everyday drinks, with kahwa also available. Carry bottled or boiled water. Alcohol is not part of local culture and is generally unavailable.

- Budget: basic guesthouses and lodges in Doda town.
- Mid-range: more options, including tourism-department huts and hotels, are available in nearby Bhaderwah.
- Upscale / heritage: none established in Doda; higher-end stays are in Jammu.
What should you buy?
Doda's bazaars handle everyday goods and local highland produce — rajma (kidney beans), walnuts, honey and dairy products are regional specialties, along with woollens suited to the cold. Bargaining is normal in the open market. Handicrafts are more readily found in Jammu or the Kashmir Valley emporiums.
