Why visit Orang National Park?

Orang National Park (officially Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park) is a compact wildlife reserve on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, spread across the Darrang and Sonitpur districts of Assam. Covering roughly 79 sq km of grassland, marsh and riverine forest, it is often called a "mini Kaziranga" for its similar landscape and its population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Since 2016 the park forms the core of the Orang Tiger Reserve, and it holds one of the higher tiger densities in the region.

The park's mix of tall elephant grass, wetlands and forest supports rhinos, Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, wild boar, hog deer and the rare pygmy hog, along with a rich birdlife — fishing eagles, pelicans, storks, and large numbers of migratory waterfowl that gather on its beels (wetlands) in winter. Its smaller scale and quieter atmosphere make it a rewarding alternative to Assam's busier reserves.

Orang is open in the dry season, roughly November to April, and closes during the monsoon (around mid-May to October) when flooding from the Brahmaputra inundates the grasslands. The cool, clear months of November to March are the best time to visit, both for comfortable weather and for the concentration of wildlife and migratory birds.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport with regular service is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati (IATA: GAU), about 120 km away, with frequent domestic and some international flights. Tezpur (Salonibari) Airport (IATA: TEZ) is closer at around 65 km but has only limited flights. From either, the park is reached by hired car or taxi.

By Train

The nearest convenient railheads are at Guwahati and on the north-bank line near Rangapara/Tezpur; from there the park is reached by road. Booking train tickets ahead through IRCTC is advisable in the busy winter season.

By Car / Road

Orang is reached by road from Guwahati (about 120 km, 3–4 hours) and from Tezpur (about 65 km), with the park entrance near the village of Silbori. Roads on the main highway are generally fair; the final approach is on smaller district roads. Most visitors arrive by private car or hired taxi, as public transport to the park gate is limited.

Inside the park, visitors travel by forest jeep safari along designated tracks, accompanied by a guide and, where required, an armed forest guard; safaris start from the range office near the entrance. Private vehicles are not allowed on the safari routes. There is no public transport within the reserve, so a hired vehicle to reach the gate and a booked jeep for the safari are essential.

What are the things to do?

  • Greater one-horned rhinoceros — The park's flagship species, regularly seen grazing in the grasslands and along the wetlands.

  • Bengal tiger and other predators — Orang has a notable tiger population (though sightings are rare and need luck), along with leopards and fishing cats.

  • Asian elephant, hog deer and wild boar — Commonly encountered across the grassland and forest.

  • Birdlife and wetlands — The park's beels host pelicans, storks, fishing eagles, Pallas's fish eagle and large flocks of migratory waterfowl in winter, making it excellent for birdwatching.

  • Brahmaputra riverine landscape — The grasslands running down to the great river give the park its scenic, open character.

  • Take a jeep safari through the grasslands and wetlands, the main way to experience the park and its wildlife, ideally in the early morning.

  • Go birdwatching around the beels and river edges, especially rewarding in winter when migratory species are present.

  • Combine with Kaziranga or Tezpur — Orang pairs well with a wider north-bank wildlife and heritage trip.

Where to eat?

There are no restaurants inside the park itself. Forest lodges and the resorts on the park fringe provide simple Assamese meals — rice with fish or chicken curry, dal and vegetables — usually arranged in advance for staying guests. For a wider choice, eat in Tezpur or carry a packed meal for the safari.

Where to drink?

Carry sealed bottled water for safaris, as there are no reliable drinking-water points inside the reserve; tap and river water should not be drunk untreated. Tea and basic soft drinks are available at the lodges and in nearby villages. There are no bars at the park; any alcohol is best arranged in the towns beforehand.

Where to stay?

Accommodation is limited and concentrated on the park fringe rather than inside the reserve. The Assam Forest Department operates basic forest lodges / inspection bungalows near the park, which must usually be booked in advance through the forest authorities, and a small number of private eco-resorts and lodges operate nearby. Many visitors stay in Tezpur, about 65 km away, which has a fuller range of hotels.

What should you buy?

There are no shops of note inside the park. Basic provisions, snacks and bottled water can be bought in the nearby villages and in the towns of Tezpur and Mangaldoi, where local handloom, gamosas and Assamese tea are also available. Stock up on essentials before entering the reserve.

Where to go next?

  • Tezpur (about 65 km) — historic town on the Brahmaputra with temples, ruins and gardens, and the nearest base for the park.
  • Kaziranga National Park (across the river / via the south bank) — the larger, world-famous rhino reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Nameri National Park (north of Tezpur, about 100 km) — forested reserve known for birdlife and river rafting on the Jia Bhoroli.
  • Guwahati (about 120 km) — Assam's largest city, with the Kamakhya temple and the region's main transport links.
