Borgarnes

Why visit Borgarnes?

Borgarnes is a town on a small peninsula jutting into Borgarfjörður fjord in West Iceland. Its name means "Borg peninsula," after the farm Borg á Mýrum on the town's outskirts, home of the Viking-age settler Egill Skallagrímsson, the central figure of Egil's Saga. While the area was settled in the 10th century, the town itself was founded in the 20th century. Borgarnes is linked to the Ring Road by the Borgarfjarðarbrú bridge, a 520 m span opened in 1981 — Iceland's second-longest bridge after Skeiðarárbrú.

How do you get there?

Borgarnes sits directly on the Ring Road (Route 1), reached from Reykjavík via the Borgarfjarðarbrú bridge across Borgarfjörður.

Walking is best for the compact centre. Car or taxi for outlying areas.

What are the things to do?

The Settlement Center museum is Borgarnes's main cultural attraction, with exhibitions covering both the settlement of Iceland and Egil's Saga, the story of Egill Skallagrímsson whose farm gave the town its name.

Visiting the Settlement Center's saga exhibitions is the main activity in Borgarnes itself, alongside using the town as a base for exploring West Iceland.
