The nearest international airport is Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), approximately 90–180 km from Tapolca depending on the location in Veszprém. From the airport, the most practical onward option is a combination of airport shuttle bus to Budapest city centre followed by a train or long-distance bus to Tapolca.

By Car / Road

Driving is the most flexible way to reach Tapolca. The town is accessible via the Hungarian secondary road network. Parking is available at the edge of the town centre. Road conditions are generally good, though rural lanes may be narrower.

The centre of Tapolca is compact enough to explore on foot. The main square, churches, and principal sights are typically within a 10–15-minute walk of each other. Local bus services connect the town centre with outlying residential neighbourhoods. Taxis are available and can be hailed at the train station or booked by phone. For exploring the wider Veszprém region, a car is the most practical option.

What are the things to do?

In town

Statue of Saint Mary . If you walk a bit south from Malom-tó along Tapolca brook, you will soon spot a statue of Saint Mary with Jesus in her hands. It's not a big monument, but still a nice little quirk of Tapolca.

Main square (Fő tér). The main square was a historical trading centre, and today is mainly a shopping destination, with cafes.

Garden of ruins . The Church Hill is the medieval centre of Tapolca. The church was built in the 13th century in Roman style, during the 14th century it was finished as Gothic church. After the Ottoman invasion, it was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1756.

Walk around the Malom-tó Pond . It is romantic and relaxing to walk around there. In the pond area there are some of the smallest species of Carp, as well as bigger species of the fish. There is a fish-feeding area and a playground too. Malom-tó is also where Tapolca brook begins, a brook which goes all the way to Balaton-coastal town Szigliget. There are several pedestrian bridges crossing Tapolca brook, all of them having romantic locks on them.

Where to eat?

Hungarian cuisine is the mainstay of dining in Tapolca. Look for a local étterem (restaurant) serving classic Hungarian dishes such as gulyás (goulash soup), pörkölt (meat stew with paprika and onions served with nokedli/dumplings), halászlé (fisherman's soup, especially in towns near rivers), and rántott hús (breaded fried meat). A cukrászda (cake shop) serves pastries, cakes, and coffee. A kocsmá (pub) offers simple hot meals alongside drinks. For self-catering, the local market or grocery store provides ingredients.

Where to drink?

Hungarian coffee culture is strong in even small towns. A kávézó (café) in the main square is the place for an espresso or a longer coffee, often served with a small glass of water. Hungarian wine is excellent and widely available: look for regional offerings from nearby wine districts. Palinka (fruit brandy, typically distilled from plums, apricots, or pears) is served as a digestif or aperitif. Local beers (sör) include Dreher, Soproni, Borsodi, and smaller craft breweries.
