Vas County (Vas megye) sits in the far west of Hungary, pressed against the Austrian border to the west and Slovenia to the southwest, in the historic region of Western Transdanubia (Nyugat-Dunántúl). It is one of Hungary's smaller and greener counties: gently rolling hills, beech and oak forests, and the meandering Rába River define a landscape that feels closer to the Alpine foothills than to the flat Great Plain most visitors associate with Hungary. The county seat, Szombathely, is among the oldest cities in the country, founded by the Romans as Savaria.
What gives Vas its travel character is the combination of deep history and quiet rural scenery. You'll find Roman ruins, a near-perfectly preserved medieval border town, Baroque and neoclassical episcopal architecture, and — in the far southwest — the Őrség, a folk-cultural landscape of scattered hamlets, traditional "bell-tower" villages, pottery, and protected nature. Thermal water is the county's other great asset, with several spa towns built on Hungary's abundant geothermal reserves.
For travellers, Vas rewards a slower pace: it is a region for spa breaks, cycling along river valleys, wine and folk-craft touring, and day trips that cross easily into neighbouring Austria. It is less crowded than Lake Balaton or Budapest, and that relative calm is much of its appeal.
When to Visit
Late spring through early autumn (May–September) is the most comfortable window, with warm but rarely scorching summers and the surrounding countryside at its greenest. The Őrség in particular is loveliest in late spring and early autumn, when the forests turn and the rural festivals cluster.
Vas, being closer to the Alps, tends to be slightly cooler and wetter than central or eastern Hungary — pack a layer and a rain shell even in summer. Winters are cold and grey but are exactly when the county's thermal spas (Sárvár, Bük) come into their own, making it a genuine year-round destination for spa-focused travellers.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Szombathely is the transport hub and the natural base. It sits on the rail line linking it to Budapest (via Győr or Veszprém) and has good regional and cross-border connections, including services toward Austria. Trains and MÁV/regional buses (Volánbusz) connect Szombathely with the main towns, though service to the smaller Őrség villages thins out and a car is far more practical for rural touring.
Approximate driving distances from Szombathely: Kőszeg is around 20 km north; Sárvár roughly 25–30 km east; Bük about 30 km northeast; the Őrség (around Őriszentpéter) roughly 60 km south. None of these are long hauls — the county is compact, and most highlights are within an hour's drive of one another. Taxis are available in the larger towns but are best arranged by phone or app rather than hailed.
For the spa towns and the historic core of Kőszeg, walking and cycling are ideal; Vas has a developing network of cycle routes, including river-valley and cross-border options into Austria.
Cuisine
Vas County's cooking belongs to the western Transdanubian tradition, hearty and rooted in local farms and forests. Game (venison, wild boar) appears often, reflecting the forested countryside, as do mushroom dishes and freshwater fish. Pumpkin-seed oil (tökmagolaj), a specialty shared with neighbouring Austria and Slovenia, is a regional signature — dark, nutty, and drizzled over salads and soups.
The Őrség is associated with rustic, smallholder fare: buckwheat dishes, dödölle (a potato-and-flour dumpling dish), and local cheeses and honey sold direct from producers. Pastries and strudels reflect the long Austrian influence on the western border.

WhatsAppCulture & Festivals
Szombathely's Roman past is a living part of its cultural identity, celebrated through reconstructions and events tied to the ancient Savaria; the city has long hosted historical-themed festivities drawing on this heritage. The county also has a strong folk-craft tradition, most visibly the pottery and woodcraft of the Őrség, where artisan workshops and craft markets are part of the visitor experience.
Music and classical performance have a home in Szombathely, and the spa towns run seasonal cultural and wellness programming through the warmer months.
Notable Experiences
- Walk medieval Kőszeg — one of Hungary's best-preserved historic small towns, with its castle, gated old town, and tightly knit Baroque-and-Gothic streetscape right on the Austrian border.
- Soak at Sárvár or Bük — two of western Hungary's leading thermal spa resorts, built on rich geothermal waters, ideal for a multi-day wellness break in any season.
- Explore the Őrség — a protected folk-cultural landscape of scattered hamlets, traditional architecture, and working potters and craftspeople in Hungary's quiet southwestern corner.
- Trace Roman Savaria in Szombathely — Roman ruins, the Iseum (a reconstructed temple of Isis), and the city's episcopal Baroque core in one of the country's oldest settlements.
- Cycle the Rába valley and cross-border routes — gentle river-valley riding that links Vas's towns and connects easily into neighbouring Austria.
