Somogy spreads across the rolling hills and lake shores of southwestern Hungary, in the historic region of Transdanubia. Its northern edge is defined by the southern shore of Lake Balaton — Central Europe's largest freshwater lake — while its interior is a quiet patchwork of low hills, oak forests, vineyards, and farming villages threaded by the Kapos and Drava river valleys. The county seat, Kaposvár, sits roughly in the centre, a relaxed provincial city of museums, theatres, and a pedestrianised old town.
What gives Somogy its travel character is the contrast between its two faces. The Balaton shore in summer is one of Hungary's busiest holiday belts: beaches, marinas, lakeside promenades, and resort towns that swell with families and weekenders. Just a short drive inland, the Zselic hills offer the opposite — beech and oak woodland, dark-sky stargazing, thermal spas, and sleepy market towns where the pace barely changes from one decade to the next.
For travellers, Somogy works as both a high-summer lake destination and a slower, year-round rural escape. Thermal baths, wine cellars on the Balaton hillsides, gentle cycling routes, and protected forest landscapes mean the county rewards visitors well outside the July–August peak.
When to Visit
The Balaton shore is overwhelmingly a June–August destination, when the shallow lake water warms to comfortable swimming temperatures and the resort towns run at full tilt. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months; June and early September offer warm water with thinner crowds and better-value lodging.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) suit the interior — the Zselic hills are at their best for hiking and the grape harvest brings activity to the hillside wine villages around the lake. Winter is quiet; thermal spas at towns like Igal and Csokonyavisonta become the main draw, and the resort strip largely shuts down.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Distances within Somogy are modest, but the lake shore and the inland hills form two separate travel axes. Kaposvár is the rail and road hub of the interior, connected by the Budapest–Kaposvár–Gyékényes line and onward services. The Balaton shore is served by the busy southern Balaton railway running along the lake from Siófok west through the resort towns toward Fonyód — frequent in summer and the easiest way to hop between beach towns without a car.
Intercity and regional buses (Volánbusz) link Kaposvár with the smaller towns and the lake, though service to rural villages thins out on weekends. A car gives the most freedom for reaching the Zselic forests, thermal-spa villages, and wine cellars that public transport reaches poorly.
Rough driving distances: Kaposvár to Siófok is around 70 km; Kaposvár to Fonyód around 50 km; the resort towns along the south shore are 10–20 km apart and chain together easily by road or rail. In summer, lake ferries also cross to the north (Veszprém-side) shore from south-shore ports.
Cuisine
Somogy's cooking is hearty Transdanubian country fare, built on freshwater fish, pork, game, and the produce of its forests. On the Balaton shore, the signature street food is fried lake fish — most famously rántott keszeg (battered, deep-fried small bream) sold at lakeside stalls, alongside grilled fogas (pike-perch), the prized Balaton catch. Halászlé (paprika-rich fisherman's soup) appears on shore-town menus throughout the season.
Inland, the table turns to game from the Zselic forests — venison and wild boar stews — and to roast pork dishes. Look for mangalica (the fatty, curly-haired Hungarian heritage pig) in regional kitchens. The hills above the southern shore produce respectable white wines; cellar rows at the Balaton wine villages pour local Olaszrizling and other crisp whites to go with the fried fish.
Vegetarians will find the usual Hungarian standbys — lángos (fried dough, classic Balaton beach food), főzelék (thick vegetable stews), and breaded fried cheese (rántott sajt) — though strictly meat-free dining is easier in Kaposvár and the larger resort towns than in rural villages.

WhatsAppCulture & Festivals
Kaposvár is the county's cultural anchor, with a long theatrical tradition (its drama company is nationally known) and an artistic legacy tied to painters József Rippl-Rónai and János Vaszary, both associated with the city; Rippl-Rónai's former villa and museum are a focus for art visitors.
The summer season along the Balaton shore brings a steady run of open-air concerts, beach events, and town festivals across the resort strip from June through August. Folk traditions, crafts, and wine events feature in the hillside villages during the autumn harvest.
Notable Experiences
- Swim and unwind on the Balaton south shore — the gently shelving, shallow water of the southern beaches is ideal for families, with marinas, promenades, and resort nightlife strung along the lake from Siófok westward.
- Stargaze in the Zselic — the Zselic Starry Sky Park is one of Europe's recognised dark-sky reserves, drawing visitors for some of the clearest night skies in Hungary, set amid protected beech-oak woodland.
- Soak in a thermal spa — Somogy's interior hides traditional thermal baths (such as those around Igal and Csokonyavisonta), a year-round draw when the lake season is over.
- Explore Kaposvár's art and theatre — wander the pedestrian old town, then visit the Rippl-Rónai villa-museum for a taste of the painter's world.
- Hillside wine and fried-fish circuit — pair a tasting at the south-shore wine cellars with fresh fried Balaton fish at a lakeside stall, the county's most characteristic food-and-drink ritual.
