Why visit?

Nyíregyháza is the county seat and largest city of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, in Hungary's Northern Great Plain region near the borders with Ukraine and Romania. As a "city with county rights," it governs itself independently of the surrounding county while serving as its administrative and economic hub. The city centre is a workaday Hungarian provincial capital, but its real drawing card lies just north, in the leafy suburb of Sóstó, home to thermal baths, a lake, and an open-air folk museum.

The wider region is defined by orchards and farmland, most famously apple growing, and by the sandy soils of the Nyírség landscape, giving the area a gentler, greener character than the flatter puszta further south. Nyíregyháza itself sees relatively few Western tourists compared to Budapest or Lake Balaton, but is a regular stop for visitors from neighbouring Poland, Ukraine, and Romania, as well as for domestic Hungarian travellers heading to Sóstó's thermal waters.

For travellers, Nyíregyháza works best as a base for exploring the surrounding Northern Great Plain, including day trips into the Nyírség forest region and connections onward toward Tokaj's wine country to the southwest.

When is the best time to visit?

Peak (Jun-Aug): warm to hot, daytime highs commonly 28-32°C, the busiest season at Sóstó's thermal baths and lake, with accommodation prices at their highest. Shoulder (Apr-May, Sep-Oct): mild, sunny days around 15-25°C and noticeably thinner crowds, a strong window for sightseeing and for the thermal baths without the summer rush. Off (Nov-Mar): cold and often grey, with lows around -2 to 3°C; many rural and open-air attractions reduce hours, though Sóstó's baths remain a cosy draw in the cold, and December brings festive Christmas markets to the city centre.

The best overall window is mid-May to mid-June or September, combining comfortable weather with lighter crowds; the depths of January-February bring the shortest days and least outdoor appeal.

How do you get around?

Nyíregyháza's compact centre is easily walkable, with most sights and services within a short distance of Kossuth tér. Local buses connect the centre with the Sóstó thermal-bath district a few kilometres north, the city's single biggest visitor draw. For onward travel, Nyíregyháza has direct train service from Budapest's Nyugati and Keleti stations (roughly 3 hours via Debrecen or Miskolc), plus international connections toward Ukraine. The bus station, adjacent to the train station, runs frequent regional services to Mátészalka, Vásárosnamény, and other Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg towns, along with routes to Eger, Miskolc, and Tokaj. Taxis are inexpensive and readily available in the centre.

What should you eat?

Northern Great Plain cooking shares Hungary's broader love of paprika-rich stews and hearty, meat-forward dishes: expect gulyás, pörkölt, and grilled meats at local vendéglő (inns) and csárda. The region around Nyíregyháza is well known for apple growing, and apple-based desserts and preserves are a regional specialty worth seeking out, alongside plum dishes and homemade pálinka fruit brandy.

Restaurants around the pedestrianised centre near Kossuth tér cover the usual range from simple canteen-style ebédlő lunch spots to more polished dining. Vegetarian options are increasingly available in central restaurants, though traditional menus remain meat-heavy; self-caterers will find good fresh produce, including the region's apples, at local markets.

What is the culture like?

Nyíregyháza's cultural identity centres on its role as a regional hub for Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg's folk traditions. The Sóstó Village Museum (Sóstói Múzeumfalu), an open-air ethnographic museum near the thermal-bath district, preserves traditional Nyírség farmhouses and rural life, and is one of Hungary's larger skanzen-style museums.

The city hosts a variety of cultural and folk events through the warmer months tied to its identity as a plains and orchard region, and the Sóstó thermal spa area anchors much of local leisure culture year-round, drawing both residents and visitors from across the borderlands with Ukraine and Romania.
