Heves is a landlocked county in northern Hungary, wedged between the Great Hungarian Plain to the south and the volcanic Mátra and Bükk mountain ranges to the north. Its county seat, Eger, is one of Hungary's most beloved provincial towns — a compact Baroque city famous for its hilltop castle, its surviving Ottoman minaret, and the red wine region that surrounds it. For a small county, Heves packs in an unusual range of landscapes: vineyard-covered hills, the country's highest peaks, thermal spa villages, and the flat farmland of the southern plain around the town of Heves itself.
What defines Heves as a travel destination is the combination of wine, mountains, and water within easy reach of one another. The Mátra range includes Kékestető (1,014 m), the highest point in Hungary, while the Eger and Mátraalja wine districts produce some of the country's best-known reds and whites. Add the geothermal springs that feed spa resorts at Egerszalók and Demjén, and you have a region that draws Hungarian weekenders year-round — for skiing and hiking in the hills, wine tasting in the cellar valleys, and soaking in mineral baths.
The county is well positioned for a relaxed two-to-three-day trip from Budapest, roughly 130 km to the west, making it a popular short break rather than a long-haul destination.
When to Visit
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the sweet spots. September is especially rewarding: the grape harvest brings wine festivals to Eger and the Mátra foothills, and the weather stays mild and dry. The vineyards turn gold in October.
Summer (July–August) can be hot on the southern plain but stays pleasant in the Mátra mountains, which act as a natural escape from the heat — Kékestető is reliably several degrees cooler than the lowlands. Winter brings modest skiing to Mátraszentistván and Kékestető, Hungary's small but genuine ski areas, typically from December into February depending on snowfall. The thermal baths at Egerszalók and Demjén are at their most atmospheric in cold weather, when steam rises off the open-air pools.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Eger is the natural hub. It sits at the end of a branch rail line; most train journeys from Budapest's Keleti station route via Füzesabony, where you change to the Eger branch — reckon on roughly two hours total. Füzesabony is the main junction in the county, linking the Budapest–Miskolc main line with the Eger spur.
For the Mátra mountains, Gyöngyös is the gateway town, reached by rail and frequent buses from Budapest. From Gyöngyös, the narrow-gauge Mátra forest railway and local buses climb toward Mátrafüred, Mátraháza, and the Kékestető summit. Volánbusz intercity coaches connect the main towns and are often more direct than the trains for shorter hops.
Distances are short: Eger to Gyöngyös is about 50 km, Eger to the spa village of Egerszalók only around 10 km, and Eger to the town of Heves on the plain roughly 35 km. A car is the most flexible option for reaching the cellar valleys, mountain villages, and thermal resorts, many of which have thin public-transport service.
Cuisine
Heves cooking is hearty northern-Hungarian fare, built around the county's wine and game. Around Eger, look for dishes paired with the local reds — slow-cooked stews and roasts that stand up to a glass of Egri Bikavér ("Bull's Blood of Eger"), the county's signature blend. Game from the Mátra and Bükk forests — venison and wild boar — appears on country restaurant menus, often in paprika-rich ragouts.
The defining experience is wine rather than a single plate. Eger's Szépasszony-völgy (Valley of the Beautiful Women) is a horseshoe of cellars cut into tuff rock just outside the city centre, where you can move from cellar to cellar tasting Bikavér, the white Egri Csillag blend, and crisp Olaszrizling and Leányka whites, usually accompanied by simple plates of sausage, cheese, and bread. Pair a visit with a pogácsa (savoury scone) or chimney cake from a market stall.
Vegetarians will find the standard Hungarian meat-free staples — főzelék (thick vegetable stews), túrós dishes, and lángos — though menus in the wine cellars lean heavily carnivorous.

WhatsAppCulture & Festivals
Eger anchors the county's cultural life. Its Baroque old town, castle, and lyceum reflect a layered history — medieval fortress, Ottoman occupation (the minaret is among the northernmost in the former Ottoman world), and a Catholic revival that left the city its churches and the grand Basilica. The wine harvest each autumn is the cultural high point, marked by festivals in Eger and across the Mátraalja around Gyöngyös.
Folk and craft traditions of the Mátra villages — embroidery, woodwork, and music — surface at regional fairs and village days through the warmer months. Eger also hosts cultural and music programming tied to its university and historic venues.
