El Progreso
Yoro, Honduras
Why visit El Progreso?
El Progreso is the fourth-largest urban center in Honduras, situated in the department of Yoro along the banks of the Río Ulúa. Positioned on the eastern edge of the fertile Sula Valley at the base of the Mico Quemado mountain range, the city serves as a major transport junction connecting San Pedro Sula with the Caribbean coastal highway and the interior highlands. Nicknamed "La Perla del Ulúa" (The Pearl of the Ulúa), the settlement expanded rapidly during the early 20th century as a key logistical rail center for the banana export operations run by the Tela Railroad Company.
Today, El Progreso functions as an active commercial hub, artisan woodworking center, and strategic transit point. Travelers visit to examine the region's renowned mahogany carvings at local workshops, tour the outdoor Railway Museum containing vintage locomotives from the banana boom, hike to mountain streams in the Mico Quemado wildlife reserve, or stop over while traveling between San Pedro Sula and the northern beaches of Tela and La Ceiba.
The city has a tropical savanna climate with high temperatures throughout the year. Daytime temperatures typically range from 29°C to 35°C (84°F to 95°F), with nighttime lows between 20°C and 24°C (68°F to 75°F). Precipitation increases significantly from late spring through autumn, during which rainfall in the surrounding mountains can cause the Río Ulúa to rise substantially.
