Santa Elena

La Paz, Honduras

Why visit Santa Elena?

Santa Elena is a small municipio in the department of La Paz, set in the hilly, Lenca-influenced highlands of central-western Honduras. Its economy is agricultural, coffee, corn, and beans on the surrounding slopes, and the town follows the rhythm of planting and harvest rather than any visitor season. The centre is a modest highland township: a plaza with the Catholic church and municipal building, and a handful of small shops and comedores serving the surrounding rural aldeas.

Santa Elena is not set up for tourism and receives very few outside visitors; it is a genuine rural highland community, of interest mainly to travellers exploring La Paz department beyond the departmental capital. The elevation gives it a milder climate than Honduras's hot lowlands, with cool mornings and evenings and warm, sunny days in the dry season.
