San Luis

Comayagua, Honduras

Why visit San Luis?

San Luis is a small municipio in the department of Comayagua, in the central highlands of Honduras. It is a farming community set among the hills that rise between the Comayagua valley and the surrounding sierra, with an economy built on coffee, corn, and cattle rather than tourism. The town centre follows the familiar Honduran pattern: a plaza fronted by a modest Catholic church, the municipal building, and a scatter of small shops and comedores serving the surrounding rural aldeas.

San Luis is not a destination most travellers seek out on its own; its appeal lies in being a genuine, unpolished slice of highland Honduran life, useful mainly to travellers exploring Comayagua department beyond the well-known colonial city of Comayagua itself. The elevation keeps the climate milder than the hot lowlands, with cool mornings and evenings and warm, sunny days through the dry season.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Palmerola International Airport (XPL) near Comayagua city, roughly 1-1.5 hours away by road, which handles domestic flights and a growing number of international routes; Toncontín International Airport (TGU) in Tegucigalpa, about 2-2.5 hours away, is the larger alternative. A taxi or rental car is needed to continue from either airport into San Luis.

By Car / Road

San Luis is reached via secondary roads off the main routes linking Comayagua city, the departmental capital, a drive of roughly an hour depending on conditions. From Tegucigalpa the drive is about 2.5-3 hours via the CA-5 highway and departmental roads. The main routes are paved, but the final approach to San Luis and its outlying aldeas is often unpaved and can slow considerably after rain. Regular bus and colectivo (shared van) services connect San Luis with Comayagua city and neighbouring towns, though schedules are informal; the last services back to the departmental capital typically run in the late afternoon or early evening.

San Luis is compact enough to explore on foot, with most points of interest within walking distance of the town centre. Mototaxis and tuk-tuks are available for trips to outlying areas or neighbouring villages. Local transport options are affordable and widely used by residents.
