Tocoa

Colón, Honduras

Why visit Tocoa?

Tocoa is the largest urban center and commercial capital of the Colón Department, situated in the Aguán River Valley (Valle del Aguán) in northern Honduras. Located roughly 50 km southwest of the coastal port of Trujillo and 125 km east of La Ceiba, Tocoa functions primarily as the economic hub for the region's extensive agro-industrial sector, which produces African palm oil, citrus fruits, grains, and beef cattle. The central streets are pragmatic and active, filled with agricultural supply shops, hardware stores, bank branches, and wholesale markets catering to local farmers and freight haulers.

Travelers encounter Tocoa primarily as a key transit node when moving between La Ceiba, the Trujillo coastline, and the Mosquitia region further east. It also serves as an access point for communities in the upper Aguán Valley and the Montaña de Botaderos mountain range to the south. Visitors should note that rural sectors of the Aguán Valley have experienced localized agrarian land disputes; stick to main highways and well-traveled urban areas.

The climate is tropical lowland, characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. Daytime highs regularly range from 30°C to 34°C (86°F to 93°F), with nighttime lows rarely dropping below 21°C (70°F). The wet season brings frequent downpours between May and December, whereas the driest weather occurs from January through April.
