Faranah

Faranah is a region in central Guinea, straddling the Niger River. The capital is Faranah town. The region is known for the National Park of Upper Niger (Haut Niger), a protected area for elephants, chimpanzees, and forest buffalo. The area is the homeland of the Malinke people.

The dry season (November-April) is the best time for wildlife viewing in the national park. The rainy season (May-October) makes roads difficult.

The N2 highway runs through Faranah. Bush taxis connect the main towns. A 4x4 is recommended for travel to the national park.

Malinke cuisine features rice, couscous, grilled meat, and sauces based on okra, peanuts, or baobab leaves. Street food is limited.

The Malinke people are predominant. The Faranah region celebrates the annual Fete de l'Independence. The Niger River is central to local culture and transport.
