Saint Patrick is the northernmost parish on Grenada's main island, stretching from the mountainous interior to the Atlantic coast. Its capital is Sauteurs, a town of historical significance as the site where the last Carib inhabitants reportedly leapt to their deaths from the cliffs rather than submit to French colonisation in 1652. The parish is known for its dramatic northern coastline, Levera National Park, and the historic River Antoine Rum Distillery.
Saint Patrick has a rugged, less developed character than the southern parishes. The coast is wild and exposed, with powerful Atlantic waves, mangrove wetlands, and nesting beaches for leatherback turtles. The interior is mountainous, with dense rainforest and some of Grenada's most productive nutmeg and cocoa estates.
The parish attracts visitors interested in nature, history, and authentic Grenadian culture away from the resort areas. Levera Beach and its surrounding national park are the main draw, particularly during turtle nesting season (March–July).
When to Visit
January through April is the best period, with drier weather for coastal exploration and hiking. Leatherback turtle nesting season runs March through July, with peak activity in April and May — night-time guided tours are available at Levera Beach.
The Sauteurs Fisherman's Birthday celebration (typically in summer) and Spicemas (August) are local events worth timing a visit around. The wet season brings heavier rain to the northern parishes, and some interior roads become difficult.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Sauteurs is about 45 minutes from St George's by minibus (Route 9, approximately 7 XCD / US$3), running through Grenville along the east coast road. Route 9 connects Grenville to Sauteurs along the northern coast, with minibuses running several times daily.
Within Saint Patrick, minibuses connect Sauteurs to surrounding villages, though service is infrequent. A taxi from St George's to Sauteurs costs approximately 150–200 XCD (US$55–75), and hiring one for a full-day tour of the parish (250–350 XCD / US$90–130) is recommended.
The road from Sauteurs to Levera and the northeastern coast is narrow and partly unpaved. A 4x4 is helpful for reaching remote beaches, though regular cars can manage with care.

WhatsAppCuisine
Dining in Saint Patrick is limited to simple local fare. Sauteurs has a few small restaurants and rum shops serving traditional Grenadian dishes — stew chicken, fried fish, rice and peas, and provisions. The Sauteurs market sells fresh fish and produce on market days.
River Antoine Rum Distillery offers tastings of its potent local rum, which is not exported due to its high alcohol content. Roadside sellers offer fresh fruit and coconut water.
For more varied dining, Grenville (30 minutes south) has additional options. Visitors exploring remote areas should bring food and water, as facilities are scarce along the northeastern coast.
Culture & Festivals
Saint Patrick has a rich cultural heritage connected to its Carib history and agricultural traditions. Sauteurs is named after the Carib leap ("sauter" meaning "to jump" in French), and this history is commemorated at the Carib's Leap site overlooking the cliffs.
The River Antoine Rum Distillery, operating since 1785, is a living cultural monument — tours reveal the unchanged process of sugar cane crushing, fermentation, and distillation using a historic water wheel. The rum produced here is too strong for export and is consumed locally.
The parish celebrates national events including Independence Day (February 7) and Spicemas (August). Village-level traditions include church fêtes, fishermen's blessings, and communal cooking of oil down. The Catholic church in Sauteurs is the parish's main religious and social institution.
