Overview

Saint David is a parish on the southeastern coast of Grenada's main island, stretching from the outskirts of St George's in the west to the rugged Atlantic shoreline in the east. It is one of the more diverse parishes in terms of landscape, encompassing sheltered bays, agricultural lowlands, and the wild windward coast. The parish is relatively quiet compared to Saint George, with fewer tourist facilities but a more authentic, local character.

The area is known for its dramatic coastline, particularly around La Sagesse Bay — one of Grenada's most beautiful and least-visited beaches. Saint David also contains several historic estates and plantation houses, remnants of the sugar and cocoa era, some of which have been converted into boutique accommodation. The parish is a good base for visitors who want proximity to St George's without being in the thick of the tourist zone.

Agriculture remains important in Saint David, with nutmeg, cocoa, and banana cultivation in the hills. The parish has a strong community identity, with village life revolving around church, rum shops, and the weekly rhythms of fishing and farming.

When to Visit

January through April is the best period, with drier weather and clearer skies for coastal exploration. La Sagesse Bay is most pleasant in these months, when the Atlantic swells are moderate and swimming is safe.

The parish has no major annual festivals of its own, but participates in national events including Spicemas (August) and Independence Day celebrations (February 7). The wet season (June–December) brings heavier rainfall, particularly on the windward coast, though showers are usually brief.

Getting Around

Saint David is served by minibuses on routes connecting St George's to the southeastern parishes. The main road runs from the capital through the parish toward Grenville on the east coast. Local minibuses also connect smaller villages; fares are typically 2.50–5 XCD (US$1–2).

The parish is about 15–20 minutes by car from St George's. Roads are generally good along the main route but become narrow and unpaved in the interior and along the coast. Taxis are the most practical option for reaching La Sagesse and other coastal spots, as public transport to these areas is infrequent.

Distances: St George's to Corinth (a central village) is about 10 km; Corinth to the Atlantic coast is a further 5–8 km on winding roads.

Cuisine

Dining options in Saint David are limited, reflecting its rural character. The best food is found at small local restaurants and guesthouses, particularly around La Sagesse, where the beachside restaurant serves fresh-caught seafood — grilled lobster, fried fish, and callaloo soup are staples.

In the villages, rum shops offer simple cooked meals (stew chicken, rice and peas, fried dumplings) alongside local rum. The Westerhall area has a small selection of eateries. For more variety, St George's is a short drive away.

Local specialties include fresh coconut water from roadside vendors, cocoa tea made from locally grown beans, and seasonal fruits available from village sellers. The area around Corinth has a few small shops selling basic provisions.

Culture & Festivals

Saint David's culture is rooted in the traditional Grenadian village life of fishing, farming, and church. The parish has a strong Methodist and Catholic presence, with Sunday services being important community gatherings.

The Westerhall Rum Distillery is a cultural landmark — one of Grenada's historic rum producers, though now operating on a smaller scale than in its heyday. The ruins of sugar plantation estates throughout the parish are reminders of the colonial era.

Local traditions include storytelling, particularly Anansi stories of West African origin, and the preparation of communal dishes like oil down for village celebrations. Music in Saint David tends toward the traditional — folk songs, quadrille dancing, and drumming at community events.
