Preveza

Preveza is a coastal town in Epirus, in northwestern Greece, sitting at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf where it meets the Ionian Sea. In 2021 it had a population of around 30,000. The town has a harbourfront promenade and old fortifications, and lies directly across the gulf's narrow strait from Aktio, near where the Battle of Actium was fought in 31 BC — the naval engagement in which Octavian defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra. Octavian founded the city of Nicopolis ("city of victory") a few kilometres north of modern Preveza to commemorate the win; its ruins, including Roman and Byzantine walls, churches, a stadium, and two theatres, are a short drive from town today.

By air, Aktion National Airport (PVK), across the strait near Aktio, serves Preveza and the wider area with seasonal connections.

The town centre is compact and walkable; a passenger ferry and an underwater road tunnel both connect Preveza across the strait to Aktio.

The ruins of ancient Nicopolis, a short distance north of town, include Roman and Byzantine walls, churches, a stadium, and two theatres, and mark the site Octavian founded after his victory at the nearby Battle of Actium. In town, the harbourfront promenade and old fortifications are the main points of interest.

Cafés and bars along the Preveza waterfront serve Greek coffee, frappé, and local wines. Ouzo and tsipouro are popular local spirits.
