Central Region is Ghana's historic coastal heart, tracing the country's earliest encounters with European traders. Its capital, Cape Coast, was the seat of British colonial administration until 1877 and is home to the infamous Cape Coast Castle — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a powerful symbol of the transatlantic slave trade. The region stretches along the Atlantic coast from the western boundary with the Western Region eastward toward the Greater Accra border.
For travellers, Central Region combines Ghana's most emotionally resonant historical sites with idyllic beaches, fishing villages, and the pristine rainforest of Kakum National Park. The coastline is dotted with former European forts and castles, while inland areas offer forest reserves and traditional festivals. The Fante people are the predominant ethnic group.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time is November to March during the dry season. December sees vibrant Christmas and Fante festival celebrations. The rainy seasons (April–July and September–October) make certain roads difficult but the forests are at their greenest. Kakum's canopy walk is open year-round, but avoid heavy downpours for the best experience.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
The Cape Coast–Accra highway (N1) runs the length of the coastal region. Trofros and buses connect Cape Coast to Accra (2.5 hours east), Takoradi (2 hours west), and all coastal towns. Kakum National Park is a 30-minute drive north of Cape Coast. Shared taxis and minibuses serve inland destinations like Assin Fosu and Dunkwa-on-Offin.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Central Region is famous for its seafood. Fante kenkey (a fermented maize dumpling) with fried fish and shito (black pepper sauce) is the signature dish. Grilled tilapia with banku, lobster, and prawns are abundant along the coast. Cape Coast has the best concentration of seafood restaurants in Ghana. Fufu and light soup are common inland. The region's position along the coast means fresh fish features in nearly every meal.
What is the culture like?
The Fante people's culture is celebrated through several major festivals. The Aboakyer (deer-hunting) festival in Winneba (April–May) is one of Ghana's most famous traditional events. The Akwambo festival (August–September) involves path-clearing and purification. The Oguaa Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast (September) is a grand durbar of chiefs with processions and regatta. The numerous coastal castles are powerful cultural and historical sites.
