Yeji

Bono East, Ghana

Why visit Yeji?

Yeji is a fishing port on the eastern shore of Lake Volta in the Bono East Region. It sits on the west bank of the lake, which was formed when the Akosombo Dam was completed in 1965, flooding the Volta River basin to create the largest reservoir by surface area in the world. Yeji is one of the lake's principal crossing points: a car-and-passenger ferry operated by the state-owned Volta Lake Transport Company runs across the lake to Makango on the eastern (Eastern Gonja) shore, a crossing long used to link the Kumasi–Tamale corridor before more traffic shifted to the all-road route via Techiman and Buipe. The waterfront is a working fishing port, with canoes, nets, and fish-smoking activity tied to the daily catch.
