Why visit?

Woleu-Ntem is a province in northern Gabon, bordering Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. The capital is Oyem. The province is covered in dense rainforest and is one of Gabon's main agricultural regions, known for cocoa, coffee, and rubber plantations. It is also a transit corridor for trade with Cameroon via the N2 highway.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry seasons (June-August and December-February) are the best times for travel. The wettest months are September-November and March-May.

How do you get around?

The N2 highway connects Oyem to Libreville (about 6 hours) and to the Cameroonian border. Buses and shared taxis run between towns. Domestic flights connect Oyem to Libreville.

  • Bitam — A border town near Equatorial Guinea with a busy market.

What should you eat?

The cuisine reflects the province's agricultural wealth: cocoa-based drinks, fresh plantains, cassava, and smoked game. Oyem has restaurants serving poulet nyembwe and grilled fish from local rivers.

What is the culture like?

The Fang people are the dominant ethnic group. The Mvet epic poetry tradition is still practised. The cocoa and coffee harvests (August-October) are celebrated in local festivals.
