About Beqa

Beqa (also known as Mbengga) is an island in Fiji, located 10 km south of the main island of Viti Levu. It has a land area of 36.3 km², reaches a maximum elevation of 440 m, and had a population of 1,356 at the 2017 census. The island comprises 9 villages divided between two districts (tikinas): Sawau and Raviravi. Beqa is world-famous for its tradition of fire-walking (vilavilairevo), which originated in the Sawau district and has been a tourist attraction since the early 20th century. The island is ringed by a fringing reef and protected lagoon, making it a popular diving and resort destination. Beqa has a tropical climate with year-round warmth; the wet season is November–April and the drier season May–October.

How to reach

By Plane

By Train

By Car / Road

From Suva, drive west along Queens Road to Pacific Harbour or Deuba (about 50 km, 1 hour). Several resort boat transfers operate from these points. Independent travellers can arrange water taxis from the Deuba boat ramp.

Walking is the primary way to get around Beqa village areas. Four-wheel-drive tracks connect the villages and resorts. Boat transfers are needed to reach nearby islets such as Royal Davui on Steward Island. Resorts provide their own transport for guests.

Things to do

  • Fire-walking ceremony (vilavilairevo) — Beqa's most famous cultural tradition, performed by the men of the Sawau district. The ceremony involves walking barefoot over white-hot stones and is demonstrated for visitors at some resorts.

  • Dakuibeqa village — The chiefly village of the Sawau people and the ceremonial home of fire-walking.

  • Yanuca Island — A small island west of Beqa, reachable by boat.

  • Diving and snorkelling — Beqa Lagoon is renowned for shark diving (bull sharks, tiger sharks, reef sharks) and pristine coral gardens. Several resorts offer PADI courses and guided dives.

  • Fire-watching ceremonies — Cultural performances of fire-walking are held regularly at Beqa Lagoon Resort and other lodges.

  • Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding — The calm lagoon waters are ideal for paddling.

  • Hiking to the summit — The 440 m peak offers panoramic views of the lagoon, the Outer Reef, and the Viti Levu coastline.

  • Village visits — Guided tours to Sawau and Raviravi villages provide insight into traditional Fijian life, crafts, and customs.
