Bule Hora

Oromia, Ethiopia

Why visit Bule Hora?

Bule Hora, formerly called Hagere Mariam, is a market town and the administrative capital of the West Guji Zone in southern Oromia, Ethiopia. Located at an altitude of 1,716 meters along the main highway between Addis Ababa and Moyale, it functions as an administrative seat and commercial hub for southern Ethiopia's coffee-growing region.

The town is predominantly inhabited by the Guji Oromo people, whose social structure relies on the Gadaa system—a traditional system of democratic governance. Bule Hora sees few international tourists, remaining an operational agricultural center where daily life revolves around coffee farming, cattle trade, and regional commerce rather than travel infrastructure.

At 1,700 meters above sea level, Bule Hora stays mild throughout the year. Daytime temperatures range from 20 °C to 27 °C, while nights drop to around 10–14 °C. The landscape consists of green hills planted with enset (false banana) and coffee bushes. The main rainy season runs from June to August, while a shorter rainy period occurs in April and May.
