Why visit Malolotja Nature Reserve?

Malolotja Nature Reserve is Eswatini's largest proclaimed protected area, covering 18,000 hectares of mountain wilderness in northwestern Hhohho. Rolling grasslands and deep river valleys give way to the Malolotja River, which plunges over the 95 m Malolotja Falls on its way to the Nkomati River. More than 280 bird species have been recorded here, and the reserve is an important breeding site for endangered species including blue swallow, blue crane, bald ibis, and Stanley's bustard. Wildlife in the reserve includes zebra and various antelope species.

How do you get there?

By car/road: 30 km northwest of Mbabane. Accessible by car; a 4x4 is not essential.

What are the things to do?

Malolotja Falls, at 95 m one of Eswatini's most dramatic waterfalls, where the Malolotja River drops through the Sihlotswane gorge en route to the Nkomati River. The reserve's mountain grasslands and river valleys also support a rich diversity of birdlife, including some of the region's rarer breeding species.

Hiking, from day trails to multi-day treks, is the reserve's main activity, along with birdwatching and mountain biking. The Malolotja Canopy Tour, near the falls, is a roughly three-hour zipline circuit with ten slides and a 50 m suspension bridge crossing the Majolomba River.
