Chimborazo is a compact Andean province in central Ecuador, defined above all by the snow-capped colossus that gives it its name. At 6,263 m (20,548 ft), Volcán Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador and — because the Earth bulges at the equator — its summit is the point on the planet's surface farthest from the center, sitting kilometers higher into space than Everest's peak. The mountain dominates the western skyline and the provincial identity, ringed by the Reserva de Producción Faunística Chimborazo, a high-altitude páramo reserve where vicuñas, llamas and alpacas graze across windswept grasslands.
Beyond the volcano, Chimborazo is a province of indigenous highland culture, colonial market towns, and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on Ecuador's "Avenue of the Volcanoes." Its capital, Riobamba, sits at roughly 2,750 m and serves as the regional hub for climbers, trekkers and travelers heading into the surrounding Andes. The landscape ranges from fertile valleys and patchwork farmland to bleak, beautiful páramo above 4,000 m, often within a single afternoon's drive.
For travelers, the province rewards those who come for the mountains and the Kichwa-speaking communities that live in their shadow. It is less polished than Ecuador's headline destinations, but offers genuine high-Andes adventure — summit attempts, glacier views, community tourism, and bustling indigenous markets — within a short, accessible footprint.
When to Visit
The driest and most reliable months are roughly June to September and again around December to February, when the páramo skies are most likely to clear for mountain views and summit attempts. Climbing on Chimborazo runs year-round with a guide, but settled weather windows are most common in these drier stretches; afternoons throughout the year tend to cloud over, so early starts are the rule.
Weather here is governed by altitude, not season. Daytime temperatures in Riobamba are mild, but the páramo and refuges above 4,300 m can be near-freezing with fierce wind and sudden cloud at any time of year. Bring layers regardless of the calendar.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Riobamba is the transport hub for the province, with a central bus station linking the surrounding towns and onward cities. Frequent buses run toward Guaranda and pass the Chimborazo reserve entrance — from Riobamba it's about 1 hour and US$2.50, with departures roughly every 30 minutes (as of late 2022); ask the driver to drop you at the Chimborazo entrance at 4,300 m, where you register (free) before hiking.
The volcano itself is close to its surrounding cities: Riobamba is about 30 km to the southeast, Ambato around 30 km to the northeast (in neighboring Tungurahua), and Guaranda about 25 km to the southwest. Within the province, buses connect Riobamba to market towns like Guamote, while shared taxis fill gaps the buses don't — a taxi from the first refuge area up toward the higher refuge runs around US$15. For climbing logistics, Riobamba's tourist agencies arrange guides, equipment and transport to the mountain.

WhatsAppCuisine
Expect the hearty fare typical of the Ecuadorian highlands — warming soups, potatoes, and roasted meats suited to the cold altitude — with Riobamba's market stalls and town center the most reliable places to eat. For specific named dishes, restaurants, and streets, confirm before publishing.
Culture & Festivals
The province is strongly shaped by its indigenous Kichwa communities, whose markets, dress, and traditions remain central to highland life — Guamote's weekly market is one of the most authentic in the central Andes, and community tourism initiatives such as Casa Condor near the Chimborazo reserve offer a window into páramo village life.

WhatsAppNotable Experiences
- Climbing Chimborazo — a guided overnight ascent of Ecuador's highest peak; climbs leave around midnight to summit at sunrise, with a 9–10 hour round trip. Expect roughly US$450 per person for a group of two or more, or closer to US$600 for a private guide (Nov 2022), arranged through Riobamba agencies.
- Hiking to the refuges — a non-technical day hike from the 4,300 m entrance up to the first refuge (4,800 m), the Whymper refuge (5,000 m), and a small glacial lake at 5,100 m, the highest point reachable without a guide.
- Spotting vicuñas in the reserve — the stretch between the entrance and the first refuge offers very good chances of seeing wild vicuñas, llamas and alpacas; many travelers walk back down on foot specifically for the wildlife.
- The Casa Condor community trail — a 9 km, roughly 6-hour route from the first refuge to the Casa Condor community tourism project, passing Templo Machay and the solitary árbol Quichuar, with bus access back from Casa Condor.
- Downhill mountain biking — some agencies offer guided descents by mountain bike from the first refuge down through the páramo.
