Boca Chica

Ozama, Dominican Republic

Why visit Boca Chica?

Boca Chica is a lively beach resort town on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, situated on the shores of a large natural lagoon just 30 kilometers east of Santo Domingo. The town is built around the Boca Chica beach — a sheltered stretch of white sand enclosed within a coral reef that creates calm, shallow, turquoise waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The lagoon's protected waters make it one of the safest and most family-friendly beaches near the capital.

The town has long been Santo Domingo's go-to beach escape, earning it the nickname "the capital's beach." On weekends and holidays, the population swells as capitalinos pour in for a day of sun, seafood, and music. The vibe is distinctly Dominican — loud, festive, and social — with beachfront restaurants pumping merengue and bachata from their speakers. The Hotel Hamaca, a large all-inclusive resort, anchors the eastern end of the beach, while the western side is lined with open-air restaurants and bars.

Beyond the main beach, Boca Chica serves as a gateway to the Club Náutico marina, which has undergone significant renovation and now offers yacht berths, restaurants, and bars. The town is less polished than resort destinations like Punta Cana, but that is precisely its charm — it offers an authentic Dominican beach experience without the resort bubble, all within easy reach of the capital's historic and cultural attractions.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Las Américas International Airport (SDQ), located just 10 km east of Boca Chica — approximately 15 minutes by car. Taxis from the airport to Boca Chica cost around US$15–20. SDQ receives direct flights from major US, Canadian, and European cities, as well as connections from within the Caribbean.

By Car / Road

From Santo Domingo, take the Autopista de las Américas (DR-3) east toward the airport; the drive takes approximately 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. The route is well-signed. From Punta Cana, the drive is approximately 2.5 hours (200 km) via the DR-3 and DR-4. Caribe Tours and Metro Bus operate services from Santo Domingo's bus terminals.

Frequent minibuses (guaguas) depart from Parque Enriquillo in Santo Domingo's Zona Oriental, running directly to Boca Chica's beachfront (40 minutes, RD$100). Shared taxis (conchos) also make the trip for a similar fare.

Boca Chica is compact and the beach, restaurants, and main street are all within easy walking distance. Motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) are available for trips to nearby areas (RD$50–100). For excursions to Juan Dolio or the airport, regular guaguas and taxis are available along the main road. The town itself requires no car — everything is within a 10-minute walk.

  • Club Náutico Boca Chica — The renovated marina on the western edge of town, home to yachts, fishing boats, waterfront restaurants, and bars. A pleasant spot for an evening stroll.

  • La Matica Island — A small mangrove island in the lagoon, accessible by wading or swimming from the beach. A popular spot for photos and a unique perspective of the lagoon.

  • Playa Caribe — A wild, windswept beach just east of Boca Chica, popular with surfers for its strong waves and currents. Less crowded but not safe for casual swimming.

  • Swimming and snorkeling in the lagoon — the calm, shallow water is perfect for all ages. The coral reef supports tropical fish and sea fans. Snorkel gear can be rented from beach vendors for RD$200–400.

  • Boat tours — Water taxis from the beach and marina offer trips to nearby islands, reef snorkeling excursions, and sunset cruises. Expect to pay US$20–40 per person for a group tour.

Where to eat?

Boca Chica's dining scene revolves around its beachfront palapa restaurants, which serve fresh seafood, Dominican classics, and cold beer with your feet in the sand. This is the town's greatest strength — eating grilled fish while watching the sunset over the lagoon is a quintessential Boca Chica experience.

  • Boca Marina — Upscale seafood restaurant on the beach, known for ceviche, grilled lobster, and international dishes. Mains RD$500–1,200.
  • El Neptuno — A long-established beachfront favorite for Dominican-style seafood — pescado frito, camarones al ajillo, and langosta (when in season). Mains RD$400–900.
  • Aura — Trendy beachfront restaurant with a more contemporary menu and cocktails. Popular for sunset dinners. Mains RD$500–1,000.
  • Comedor Doña Julia — A no-frills local eatery off the main strip serving la bandera and Dominican comfort food. Lunch plates RD$150–250.

Seafood dominates the menus — lobster, shrimp, fish, and conch are all fresh and plentiful. Vegetarian options are limited but improving; rice, beans, plantains, and salads are always available. Tap water is not potable — drink bottled water.

Where to drink?

Boca Chica's bars are beachfront and open-air. Presidente and Bohemia beers are RD$100–150 at most establishments. Cocktails featuring Brugal or Barceló rum, coconut water, and tropical fruit juices are the specialty — try a mamajuana (rum, red wine, and honey-infused herbs) or a coco loco (rum poured into a fresh coconut). The beach bars along the main strip stay lively late into the night on weekends.

Bottled water is recommended. Tap water should not be consumed.
