About Poko
Poko is a remote town in the eastern part of Bas-Uélé province, located deep in the Congolese rainforest. With a population of around 10,000, Poko is one of the most isolated settlements in the province, accessible mainly by river and rough tracks. The town serves as a market center for surrounding villages and is characterized by its traditional character and lack of modern infrastructure.
The surrounding area is dense lowland rainforest, home to a diverse range of wildlife including forest elephants, chimpanzees, and numerous bird species. The Uélé River tributaries provide the primary means of transport and communication. The climate is tropical, with year-round temperatures of 24–30°C and heavy rainfall.
Poko offers a glimpse into traditional life in the Congolese interior, with most residents engaged in subsistence farming, fishing, and small-scale trade. The town has little contact with the outside world, which has preserved many traditional cultural practices.
