About Agios Athanasios

Agios Athanasios (Greek: Άγιος Αθανάσιος) is a municipality and suburb located on the hills overlooking the city of Limassol, Cyprus. Situated approximately 3 km northeast of the city center, it offers a compelling blend of traditional village charm and modern suburban convenience. Historically a small, agricultural settlement dating back to the Late Bronze Age, the municipality experienced rapid growth in the late 20th century. Following the 1974 Turkish invasion, it welcomed thousands of displaced families, earning a reputation as a welcoming civic haven.

In 1986, Agios Athanasios was officially declared a municipality. Today, it has successfully preserved its old core while developing modern residential neighborhoods and a thriving industrial zone. Visitors are drawn to its historic stone-built houses, scenic hilltop views of the Mediterranean Sea, and its proximity to the beachfront and city center of Limassol.

The climate is typical of the southern coast of Cyprus, featuring hot, dry summers and mild winters. Because of its elevated position on the hillsides, Agios Athanasios can feel slightly fresher than the coastal strip during the summer months, with a gentle breeze frequently blowing from the hills. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit for sightseeing.
