Avgorou
Ammochostos, Cyprus
Why visit Avgorou?
Avgorou is a charming, traditional agricultural village in the Famagusta (Ammochostos) District of Cyprus. It is one of the Kokkinochoria ("red soil villages"), a group of communities named for the highly fertile, iron-rich red earth that characterizes the region. Avgorou is famous for producing some of the island's finest potatoes, citrus fruits, and vegetables.
The village has deep historical roots. Its name is traditionally linked to King Evagoras of Salamis (435–374 BC), the famous ruler of the nearby ancient kingdom, who is said to have frequented the area to enjoy its natural baths. Avgorou has preserved much of its traditional Cypriot character, featuring historic stone houses, narrow streets, and a lifestyle deeply rooted in agriculture.
For travelers, Avgorou offers a peaceful, authentic rural experience. While it feels worlds away from the busy coastal resorts, it is situated within a convenient 20-to-30-minute drive of Ayia Napa, Protaras, and Larnaca. It is home to some of the region's most unique family attractions, including the CyHerbia Botanical Park and a local ethnographic museum.

CyHerbia Botanical Park and Labyrinth: Located on the outskirts of the village. A beautiful, family-friendly park featuring nine themed organic herb gardens, a lavender meditation labyrinth, and the largest hedge maze in Cyprus. The park also features a distillation room where visitors can watch the extraction of pure essential oils.
