Mayabeque is one of Cuba's two newest provinces, carved from the former La Habana Province in 2011. It occupies the southern and southeastern flank of the Havana metropolitan area, stretching from the outskirts of the capital down to the swampy southern coast along the Bay of Batabanó. The province takes its name from the Mayabeque River, which historically irrigated the fertile lowlands that remain Cuba's richest agricultural zone.
The landscape is predominantly flat and intensely farmed — tobacco fields, sugarcane plantations, vegetable gardens, and dairy farms dominate the countryside. This is Cuba's breadbasket, supplying much of Havana's fresh produce and dairy. The northern reaches rise gently into rolling hills around Jaruco and Madruga, offering pockets of scenic countryside that contrast with the monotonous flatlands to the south.
Mayabeque's appeal lies in its proximity to Havana combined with its rural authenticity. Visitors seeking to escape the capital for a day — or to experience Cuban agricultural life without venturing to the far provinces — will find quiet colonial towns, working farms, hot springs, and a coastline that, while marshy and undeveloped, has pockets of genuine character. This is not a tourist province; it is a working one, and the experience it offers is one of immersion rather than spectacle.
When to Visit
The dry season (November–April) brings the most pleasant weather, with daytime temperatures of 24–29°C, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall. The wet season (May–October) is hotter and more humid, with heavy afternoon downpours and occasional flooding in low-lying agricultural areas near the southern coast.
The Fiestas de San Juan (late June) in Güines is the province's most prominent local celebration, featuring parades, music, and street dancing. The Festival del Fuego and various patron saint festivals occur in smaller towns throughout the year, typically tied to Catholic calendar dates. Bejucal hosts a notable Fiesta de los Indianos (late December/early January) — a tradition where participants dress in white to symbolize the meeting of indigenous and Spanish cultures.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Mayabeque is compact and well-connected to Havana by the Carretera Central and the A1 motorway (autopista). San José de las Lajas, the provincial capital, sits about 35 km southeast of central Havana — reachable in 40–50 minutes by car or colectivo.
Colectivos (shared taxis) and ómnibus run frequently between Havana and the provincial towns, especially Güines (~50 km, 1 hour) and Bejucal (~30 km, 40 minutes). Fares are a few CUP or a small amount in CUC. The Hershey Electric Railway — a historic electric rail line built by the Hershey sugar company — once connected Havana to Matanzas via towns in northern Mayabeque (Jaruco, Santa Cruz del Norte). Service has been intermittent in recent years; check locally whether trains are running.
Within the province, distances are short: San José de las Lajas to Güines is about 25 km; to Batabanó roughly 40 km; to Jaruco about 20 km. Local trucks, horse-drawn carts, and occasional buses connect smaller settlements. A rental car or hired driver is the most efficient way to explore.

WhatsAppCuisine
Mayabeque's cuisine reflects its agricultural abundance. The province's fertile soil produces much of Cuba's fresh vegetables, and local markets — especially Güines' mercado agropecuario — overflow with tomatoes, peppers, yuca, boniato, and tropical fruits. Dairy products, including fresh cheese and cream, are regional specialties thanks to the province's cattle ranches.
Signature dishes include congrí (rice and beans), tostones (fried green plantains), vaca frita (crispy fried shredded beef), and lechón asado (whole roasted pork) — often served at family gatherings and private paladares. Fresh river fish and shrimp from the southern coast appear in coastal towns like Batabanó and Santa Cruz del Norte. In San José de las Lajas and Güines, paladares serve home-cooked meals for CUC 5–10. Vegetarian options center on rice, beans, root vegetables, and salads — limited but always available in the market towns.
Culture & Festivals
Mayabeque's cultural calendar revolves around patron saint festivals and agricultural celebrations. The Fiestas de San Juan (June, Güines) is the province's marquee event — a multi-day celebration with music, dance, processions, and street food. The Fiesta de los Indianos (late December/early January, Bejucal) features participants in white clothing, music, and a distinctive folk tradition celebrating the meeting of indigenous and colonial cultures.
The province has a strong tradition of guajiro (rural Cuban) music and storytelling. Local bands play son, guaracha, and punto cubano at town squares and community gatherings throughout the year. Artisan crafts include pottery, basket-weaving, and leather work tied to the agricultural economy. The northern hills around Jaruco have historically been associated with Cuban painters and poets drawn to the landscape.
