Why visit?

Zagrebačka županija (Zagreb County) wraps around Croatia's capital city like a horseshoe, stretching from the Slovenian border in the west to the lowland plains of Moslavina in the east. Unlike Croatia's coastal counties, Zagreb County is defined by rolling hills, river valleys, and fertile agricultural land rather than the Adriatic. The Samobor Hills and Žumberak Mountains in the west offer forested hiking terrain, while the Sava River floodplain dominates the central and eastern portions. This is the administrative hinterland of Zagreb — commuter towns, wine-growing slopes, and small market centres that feel a world away from the capital's bustle.

The county's character is distinctly continental. Winters bring cold fog and occasional snow, summers are warm and green, and the landscape is dotted with baroque manor houses, parish churches, and family vineyards. Samobor, the county's most visited town, is a picture-book settlement of pastel facades and café-lined squares tucked into a valley below the Oštrc peak. East of Zagreb, the towns of Velika Gorica, Vrbovec, and Ivanić-Grad are agricultural centres surrounded by cornfields and sunflower patches.

For travellers, Zagreb County functions as a day-trip or weekend extension of Zagreb itself. The region's thermal spas, wine roads, and cycling routes make it a low-key alternative to Croatia's crowded coast. The Žumberak-Samoborsko gorje Nature Park is the county's principal natural attraction — a patchwork of karst ridges, meadows, and traditional villages that feels almost Alpine.

When is the best time to visit?

Late April through June and September through mid-October are the best windows. Spring brings wildflower meadows to Žumberak and comfortable temperatures (15–22°C) for hiking and cycling. Autumn is harvest season — the Samobor and Plešivica wine roads buzz with grape picking, and the foliage across the Žumberak hills turns golden. Summer (July–August) can be hot and humid (30°C+), though the hill country stays cooler.

Winter (December–February) is cold, with temperatures hovering around 0–5°C and frequent fog in the Sava basin. Samobor's Carnival (February) is the county's biggest festival and one of Croatia's oldest. The Samobor Christmas market and Advent events draw weekend visitors from Zagreb. Thermal spa resorts like Terme Jezerčica and Aquae Vivae operate year-round and are busiest in winter. Many rural attractions reduce hours from November to March.

How do you get around?

Zagreb County is well connected to the capital. Commuter rail links Zagreb to Samobor (30 minutes, via the Zagreb–Samobor line), Dugo Selo (20 minutes), and Vrbovec (45 minutes) on the main Zagreb–Budapest line. ZET buses connect Zagreb to Velika Gorica (20 minutes) and Zaprešić (25 minutes). Regional buses serve Jastrebarsko (40 minutes) and Ivanić-Grad (45 minutes) from Zagreb's main bus station.

Car is the most practical way to reach rural areas and the Žumberak hills. The A3 motorway connects Zagreb to Ivanić-Grad and the eastern county, while the A2 runs northwest toward Zaprešić and the Slovenian border. Roads to Samobor and Jastrebarsko are well-maintained two-lane highways. Taxis and ride-hailing apps work in the suburban towns, but thin out quickly in the countryside. Cycling is increasingly popular — the county has invested in marked cycling routes through the Sava and Kupa river corridors.

Where should you go?

  • Samobor — Croatia's most charming small town, known for its baroque old town, kremšnita custard cream cake, and the annual Samobor Carnival
  • Velika Gorica — the county's largest town and Zagreb's main satellite, with the Turopolje Museum showcasing the region's wooden architecture heritage
  • Zaprešić — western gateway town with the Novi Dvori manor estate and access to the Sutla River wine country
  • Jastrebarsko — wine-producing town at the foot of Plešivica hill, surrounded by family-run wineries and forested cycling routes
  • Vrbovec — agricultural market town with the Rakovec Castle and a tradition of turkey-based dishes tied to the annual Martinje wine-blessing festival
  • Dugo Selo — commuter town east of Zagreb with a hilltop chapel offering panoramic views and a small historical museum
  • Sveta Nedelja — suburb west of Zagreb known for its lake, recreational areas, and proximity to the Samobor hills
  • Ivanić-Grad — eastern county town with thermal oil baths (the only Naftalan spa outside Azerbaijan) and access to the Lonjsko Polje wetlands
  • Sveti Ivan Zelina — quiet wine town on the eastern slopes of the Zagorje hills, known for its Sauvignon Blanc and the annual Zelina Wine Fair

What should you eat?

Zagreb County's cuisine is continental Croatian — hearty, pork-heavy, and rooted in Central European traditions. The signature dish of Samobor is salama (cured sausage) and the famous Samoborska kremšnita, a layered custard-and-puff-pastry cake that locals consider the best in Croatia. The region's other iconic product is Samobor bermet, a spiced red wine liqueur once served in Viennese coffeehouses.

Inland, the diet revolves around roasted meats (especially pork and turkey), štrukli (baked or boiled cheese pastry), mlinci (flatbread torn and roasted with turkey drippings), and hearty stews. Plešivica and Samobor are Croatia's premier Riesling and Pinot Noir zones — wine-tasting tours along the Plešivica wine road are a popular half-day excursion from Zagreb. The Martinje (St. Martin's Day) celebrations in November, when grape must is symbolically "baptised" into wine, are the social highlight of the food calendar. Local konobas and agrotourism farms offer farm-to-table meals at modest prices.

What is the culture like?

Zagreb County's cultural identity is modest and rural compared to the capital next door. The Samobor Carnival, held in February, is the county's defining event — one of the oldest carnival traditions in Croatia, with masked processions, satirical floats, and live music filling the streets for a week. The event dates back to the 19th century and culminates in the burning of a puppet figure representing the previous year's troubles.

Smaller cultural events punctuate the year. The Samobor Music Festival (June) brings classical performances to churches and courtyards. The Martinje wine-baptism celebrations (November) occur in every wine-growing village and are more social ritual than formal event. The Turopolje region around Velika Gorica preserves a tradition of wooden chapel-building and folk embroidery, showcased at the annual Turopolje Fair (September). The Naftalan spa in Ivanić-Grad hosts wellness-themed cultural weekends combining art exhibitions with spa treatments.
