Santa Bárbara is a mountain town and canton capital in Heredia Province, Costa Rica. Situated along the southwestern slopes of Barva Volcano in the Central Valley at an elevation of 1,140 to 1,250 metres above sea level, the town lies 9 kilometres northwest of Heredia city and 18 kilometres from San José. Local trade centers around coffee plantations, sugarcane fields, and mountain dairy farms.
Travelers use Santa Bárbara as a base for touring highland coffee estates, hiking near the Barva Volcano sector of Braulio Carrillo National Park, or observing daily Tico life away from urban traffic. Commercial activity centers around the central park and the 19th-century parish church.
The region has a tropical highland climate. Daytime temperatures consistently remain between 19°C and 27°C (66°F to 81°F) throughout the year, with cooler evening breezes flowing down from the volcanic slopes. Annual rainfall averages 2,300 mm, divided into distinct dry and rainy seasons.

By Bus
Autotransportes Santa Bárbara LTDA operates frequent direct routes between Heredia city and Santa Bárbara. Buses depart every 10 to 15 minutes from Terminal de Heredia (Calle 2, Avenida 0-2) between 5:00 AM and 10:30 PM. The 9-kilometre journey takes 25 to 35 minutes and costs ₡550 (~$1.10 USD). From San José, buses operated by Autotransportes Santa Bárbara leave from Calle 16 and Avenida 1 to Santa Bárbara via San Joaquín de Flores every 20 to 30 minutes (18 km, 45 to 60 minutes, ₡750 to ₡1,100 / ~$1.50 to $2.15 USD). Direct buses from Alajuela run via Route 126 every 30 minutes (10 km, 20 to 30 minutes, ₡500 / ~$1.00 USD).
By Train
No train service runs directly to Santa Bárbara. The nearest commuter rail stations operated by INCOFER are Estación San Joaquín de Flores (6 km south) and Estación Heredia (9 km southeast) on the Alajuela–Heredia–San José line. One-way train tickets cost ₡420 to ₡580 (~$0.80 to $1.15 USD). From San Joaquín or Heredia stations, travelers must transfer to a local bus or taxi to reach Santa Bárbara.
By Car
Santa Bárbara connects to Heredia city via Route 123 and Route 114. Drivers from San José take Route 1 (Autopista General Cañas) west, exiting at San Joaquín de Flores onto Route 123 north. The 18-kilometre drive from San José takes 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic congestion. From Alajuela, drive 10 kilometres east via Route 126 (20 to 25 minutes).
By Air
No airport operates in Santa Bárbara. The nearest facility is Juan Santamaría International Airport (IATA: SJO) in Alajuela, located 12 kilometres southwest. International carriers including Avianca, Copa Airlines, Volaris, American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Spirit Airlines fly daily into SJO from North and South America. Official red taxis or Uber rides from SJO to Santa Bárbara take 25 to 35 minutes and cost ₡8,000 to ₡13,000 (~$15.50 to $25 USD).
Local feeder buses operated by Autotransportes Santa Bárbara connect the town center to surrounding districts including San Pedro, San Juan, Jesús, Purabá, and Santo Domingo. Fares range from ₡350 to ₡550 ($0.70 to $1.10 USD) paid in cash colones to the driver. Red taxis (taxis rojos) park at the main rank next to Parque Central. Uber operates throughout Santa Bárbara and Heredia province, with short intra-town rides costing ₡1,500 to ₡3,000 ($3.00 to $6.00 USD). The Moovit app provides route maps and schedule tracking for local buses.

Barva Volcano Sector (Braulio Carrillo National Park): Located 15 kilometres northeast of town via Birrí. Cloud forest trails lead to the crater lagoon (Laguna Barva) at 2,900 metres elevation. Entry fee is $12 USD + 13% tax for non-resident adults ($5 USD for children), purchased in advance via the SINAC online portal.
El Arca Botanical Garden & Farm: Located 4 kilometres north in San Juan de Santa Bárbara. Features over 1,500 species of medicinal, aromatic, and edible plants, offering guided farm walks and culinary tastings. Entry fee is $15 USD for self-guided visits, $25 USD for guided tours.
Coffee Tasting and Plantation Tour: Take a guided walking tour through shade-grown coffee fields at Finca Rosa Blanca to observe harvesting techniques, processing equipment, and professional cupping sessions.
