Sangha is a department in northern Congo, named after the Sangha River that flows through its territory and forms part of the border with Cameroon and the Central African Republic. The department is covered in dense equatorial rainforest and is one of the most remote and sparsely populated parts of the country. Its main town, Ouésso, is a river port on the Sangha River and the primary gateway to the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, one of the most pristine rainforest wilderness areas in Africa.
Sangha is a destination for serious ecotourists and researchers. The Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, jointly managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Congolese government, protects a vast tract of intact forest with significant populations of western lowland gorillas, forest elephants, chimpanzees, and bongo antelope. The Sangha Trinational, a UNESCO World Heritage site shared with Cameroon and the Central African Republic, encompasses the park and neighbouring protected areas.
Travel in Sangha is challenging. The roads are unpaved and often impassable during the rainy season, and the primary means of long-distance transport is by river. French and Lingala are essential for communication. The rewards for the adventurous are extraordinary — some of the most intact and least-visited rainforest on the planet.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time is the drier season from December to February and June to September, when forest trails are less muddy and river transport is more reliable. The heaviest rains fall from March to May and October to November, making many areas inaccessible. Temperatures are warm year-round (24–32°C / 75–90°F) with very high humidity.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
River transport is the backbone of travel in Sangha. The Sangha River connects Ouésso to neighbouring towns and to the Cameroon border at Ngbala. Motorised pirogues are the standard means of transport. The main road corridor runs south from Ouésso toward Pokola and into Cuvette department. Roads are unpaved and require a 4WD vehicle. Airstrips at Ouésso and in the Nouabalé-Ndoki Park allow charter flights from Brazzaville.
Where should you go?
- Ouésso — The departmental capital and main river port, with basic services and the best access to Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park.
- Sembé — A small town north of Ouésso on the road toward the Central African Republic border.
- Souanké — A remote logging town in the far north-east, near the Sangha Trinational park complex.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Sangha's cuisine is based on river fish (capitaine, tilapia), cassava (chikwangue, foufou), and forest game. Pondu (cassava leaf stew) is the daily staple. Meals are simple and eaten at small maquis in Ouésso. Visitors staying at the lodges in Nouabalé-Ndoki will have full-board arrangements included in their package.
What is the culture like?
Sangha is home to the Mbochi, Sangha-Sangha, and other forest peoples. The Baka (pygmy) people live in the forest areas and are known for their hunting-gathering traditions, music, and knowledge of the rainforest. Cultural tours to Baka communities can be arranged from Ouésso. The isolated river towns celebrate Congolese national holidays with music and dancing.
