Overview

Pool is a department in southern Congo, surrounding the capital Brazzaville on three sides. The department takes its name from the Pool Malebo, the wide, lake-like section of the Congo River where Brazzaville and Kinshasa face each other. The landscape is a mix of savanna plateaus, gallery forest, and the broad Congo River valley. Kinkala is the departmental capital.

Pool is one of the more accessible departments, with paved roads connecting its main towns to Brazzaville. The region was affected by conflict in the late 1990s and early 2000s but has since stabilised. The Léfini Faunal Reserve and the Congo River are its main attractions.

The climate is tropical with a dry season from June to September. French is widely spoken.

When to Visit

The dry season (June–September) is the best time, when roads are in good condition. The rainy season (October–May) makes secondary roads difficult.
