Why visit?

Niari is a department in south-western Congo, stretching from the Niari Valley in the east to the border with Gabon in the west. The department is named after the Niari River, which flows through a broad, fertile valley that has long been an important agricultural and transport corridor. The landscape is diverse — savanna grasslands in the valley bottom, gallery forest along the rivers, and the forested Mayombe hills in the west.

Dolisie is the departmental capital and the largest city in the Niari Valley, a transport hub on the Congo-Ocean Railway and the RN1 highway. Mossendjo, in the west, is the second city. The department is one of Congo's most productive agricultural regions, known for cassava, palm oil, and timber.

The climate is tropical with a dry season from June to September. The RN1 highway and the railway make Niari one of the most accessible departments in Congo.

When is the best time to visit?
