Why visit?

Hainan Sheng is China's southernmost province, occupying a large tropical island (Hainan Island) in the South China Sea, plus a handful of smaller archipelagos including the disputed Xisha, Nansha, and Zhongsha Islands. Often called "China's Hawaii," Hainan is the country's premier tropical resort destination, drawing millions of domestic visitors each year with its palm-fringed beaches, lush rainforests, volcanic hot springs, and year-round warm climate. The island spans roughly 33,920 sq km — slightly larger than Belgium — and is connected to the mainland by ferry services and the Haikou–Guangzhou high-speed rail link (via the Qiongzhou Strait rail ferry).

The northern coast, anchored by the provincial capital Haikou, is more urban and commercially oriented, while the southern coast around Sanya is the island's resort heartland, with luxury hotel strips, coral reefs, and dramatic coastal scenery. The interior is mountainous and sparsely populated, home to the Li and Miao ethnic minorities whose traditional villages, textile arts, and festivals add cultural depth to a destination often stereotyped as purely beach-focused. Hainan's economy relies heavily on tourism, tropical agriculture (rubber, coconut, betel nut, tropical fruits), and its status as a Free Trade Port — China's answer to Hong Kong and Singapore.

The island's natural assets are remarkable: tropical rainforests covering the central highlands, the UNESCO-listed Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, volcanic geoparks near Haikou, mangrove wetlands, and some of China's best diving and snorkelling sites. The combination of beach resort infrastructure, ethnic minority culture, nature reserves, and duty-free shopping makes Hainan a diverse destination that appeals to honeymooners, families, adventure travellers, and luxury seekers alike.

When is the best time to visit?

Hainan enjoys a tropical monsoon climate with warm temperatures year-round. The best time to visit is from November to April, when the weather is dry, sunny, and pleasantly warm (20–28°C), with lower humidity. This is peak season, especially around Chinese New Year (January/February) and the October National Day holiday, when prices surge and beaches are crowded.

May to October brings the rainy season: hotter (28–35°C), more humid, and prone to typhoons (especially August–October). However, hotel rates drop significantly, beaches are emptier, and the interior rainforests are at their lushest. The Li ethnic minority's "San Yue San" (三月三) festival in late March or April is the island's most important cultural event — a vibrant celebration of song, dance, and courtship traditions. The Hainan International Film Festival (December) and Boao Forum for Asia (March/April) also draw visitors to the island.

How do you get around?

Hainan has a well-developed transport network for an island of its size:

  • High-speed rail (环岛高铁): The Hainan Island Ring Railway circles the entire island, connecting Haikou and Sanya via both an eastern and western route in about 1.5–2 hours. Intermediate stops include Wenchang, Qionghai (for Boao), Lingshui, and Dongfang. Trains are frequent (roughly every 30 minutes on the main routes) and affordable (Haikou–Sanya from about ¥100).
  • Buses: Long-distance buses connect all major towns. The Haikou–Sanya express bus takes about 3.5 hours. Local minibuses serve smaller towns and rural areas.
  • Taxis & ride-hailing: Taxis are plentiful in Haikou and Sanya. Didi (ride-hailing) works island-wide. Expect ¥10–15 for short urban trips, ¥200–300 for Haikou–Sanya by taxi.
  • Car rental: Increasingly popular, especially for exploring the interior and less-visited coastal areas. Self-drive requires a Chinese driving licence; many rental agencies offer a driver for an additional fee. Roads are generally good, with an expressway ring road connecting major cities.
  • Flights: Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) and Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX) are the two main airports, with frequent domestic connections and some international routes.

Where should you go?

  • Haikou — The provincial capital and transport hub on the northern coast, with volcanic geoparks, colonial-era architecture in the Qilou Old Street district, and duty-free shopping.
  • Sanya — Hainan's resort capital on the southern tip, famous for Yalong Bay, Sanya Bay, and Dadonghai beaches, plus luxury resorts and the Nanshan Buddhist temple complex.
  • Qionghai — A laid-back city near the eastern coast, gateway to the Boao Forum site and the Wanquan River.
  • Wanning — Known for excellent surfing at Riyue Bay, hot springs, and Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden.
  • Wenchang — Historic city on the northeast coast, famous for Wenchang chicken (one of Hainan's signature dishes) and China's satellite launch centre.
  • Wuzhishan — The mountain town at the foot of Hainan's highest peak (1,867 m), centre of Li minority culture and gateway to tropical rainforest trekking.
  • Dongfang — A coastal city on the western plain, known for its fossil forests, Vietnamese border heritage, and off-the-beaten-path beaches.
  • Danzhou — One of Hainan's oldest cities, with volcanic landscapes, the Song Dynasty Dongpo Academy, and traditional clay sculpture crafts.
  • Lingshui — Gateway to Nanwan Monkey Island and the Lingshui Li ethnic minority autonomous county, with emerging beach resorts.
  • Baoting — Mountain town and Li/Miao autonomous county, known for hot springs and the Yanoda Rainforest cultural tourism zone.

  • Xinglong — A former state farm turned tropical garden town, famous for its coffee, cocoa, and the Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden. Southeast Asian-influenced cuisine reflects the community's returned-overseas-Chinese heritage.
  • Baisha — A remote inland county in the central highlands, known for Li brocade weaving and pristine mountain scenery.
  • Chengmai — A western county with volcanic geoparks, longevity villages, and Fushan coffee plantations.
  • Ding'an — A quiet county town with historical temples, the Ding'an Ancient City, and proximity to the Dongzhaigang Mangrove Nature Reserve.
  • Lingao — Northwestern coastal county with the Lingao Ancient City, mangrove wetlands, and traditional pottery and fishing villages.
  • Bawang Ridge National Forest Park — A mountainous rainforest reserve in the central highlands, home to the Hainan gibbon (the world's rarest primate) and spectacular cloud forests.
  • Jianfeng Ridge National Forest Park — One of China's largest tropical rainforest reserves in the southwest, with hiking trails, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife.

What should you eat?

Hainan's cuisine is lighter and more subtly flavoured than mainland Chinese cooking, reflecting its tropical ingredients and Southeast Asian influences. Rice, seafood, tropical fruits, and coconut are staples.

  • Wenchang Chicken (文昌鸡) — Hainan's most famous dish: poached free-range chicken served at room temperature with a dipping sauce of ginger, garlic, and chicken oil. Tender, mild, and deceptively simple. Available island-wide but best in Wenchang itself.
  • Jiaji Duck (嘉积鸭) — A roasted or braised duck from Qionghai's Jiaji town, prized for its rich flavour.
  • Hele Crab (和乐蟹) — A prized local crab from Wanning's Hele town, typically steamed and served with a vinegar-ginger dip.
  • Dongshan Mutton (东山羊) — Goat from Wanning's Dongshan area, braised or stir-fried with local herbs.
  • Coconut dishes: Coconut rice, coconut chicken soup, and fresh coconut water are ubiquitous. The tropical fruit selection includes mango, jackfruit, papaya, passion fruit, and betel nut.
  • Nan Yang (南洋) cuisine at Xinglong: Returned overseas Chinese brought Indonesian and Malaysian recipes — try nasi lemak, bak kut teh, and Hainanese coffee at Xinglong's many cafés and restaurants.
  • Street food: Haikou's Qilou Old Street and Sanya's First Market (第一市场) are the best areas for seafood stalls, rice noodle soup (海南粉), and qingbuliang (清补凉) — a cold coconut-milk dessert soup with beans, taro, and jelly.
  • Dietary note: Seafood is central; vegetarians should seek Buddhist temple restaurants or specify clearly. Halal food is limited outside Haikou's Muslim quarter.

What is the culture like?

Hainan's culture is shaped by its Li and Miao ethnic minorities (roughly 1.5 million people), its history as a remote frontier island, and its proximity to Southeast Asia.

  • San Yue San (三月三) Festival — The Li and Miao people's most important celebration, held on the third day of the third lunar month (usually late March or April). Features bamboo pole dancing, traditional song competitions, bull fights, and courtship rituals. Celebrations are held across Li/Miao communities, with major events in Wuzhishan, Baoting, and Lingshui.
  • Li Brocade (黎锦) — The Li people's textile tradition, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Intricate geometric patterns are woven on backstrap looms; the craft is most actively preserved in Baisha, Wuzhishan, and Ledong counties.
  • Qilou Old Street architecture — Haikou's colonial-era arcade buildings (qilou) reflect Chinese, Southeast Asian, and European influences, dating from the early 20th century when Hainan was a major emigration hub to Southeast Asia.
  • Boao Forum for Asia (March/April) — Asia's equivalent of Davos, held annually in Boao. While the main forum is by invitation, the surrounding area hosts public cultural events.
  • Hainan International Film Festival (December) — Held in Sanya, this growing festival screens international and Chinese cinema.
  • Nanshan Buddhist Culture Festival — Events at the Nanshan temple complex near Sanya, including Buddhist ceremonies, vegetarian food festivals, and cultural performances.

What are the standout experiences?

  1. Trekking Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park — Hike through Bawang Ridge or Jianfeng Ridge to experience primary tropical rainforest, spot rare wildlife including the critically endangered Hainan gibbon (fewer than 30 individuals remain), and cool off under waterfalls in the central highlands.

  2. Surfing at Riyue Bay — China's best surf break, located near Wanning on the east coast. Consistent waves from October to April attract domestic and international surfers; board rentals and lessons are available at the bay's surf camps.

  3. Duty-free shopping at Haikou & Sanya — Hainan's Free Trade Port policy allows duty-free purchases up to ¥100,000 per person per year at designated stores (the Haikou Meilan Airport DFS and Sanya International Duty Free City are the largest). Luxury goods, cosmetics, electronics, and liquor are significantly cheaper than mainland prices.

  4. Exploring Wuzhishan and Li minority villages — Base in the mountain town of Wuzhishan to trek to the summit of Hainan's highest peak, visit traditional Li stilt-house villages, and learn about bamboo-pole dance and brocade weaving. The region offers a cooler, more authentic alternative to the coastal resorts.

  5. Diving and snorkelling off Sanya — The waters around Wuzhizhou Island and the Nanshan area have coral reefs with reasonable visibility (5–15 metres). Wuzhizhou Island is the most developed dive site, with PADI-certified operators offering introductory and certified dives year-round.
