La Ligua

La Ligua is a city of approximately 35,000 in the Valparaíso Region, 60 km north of Quillota. Founded in 1754, it is famous throughout Chile for its textiles and confectionery — La Ligua is known as the "sweet city" for its traditional dulces and also produces high-quality woollen goods.

By Plane

Arturo Merino Benítez Airport (SCL) in Santiago is 120 km south. Buses from Valparaíso run hourly (1.5 hr, CLP 3,000).

By Car / Road

From Valparaíso, take Route 5 north to La Ligua turnoff (60 km, 50 min). Paved road.

The town centre is compact and walkable. Local taxis and colectivos cover the residential areas.

• Plaza de Armas: the main square with a church and a monument to the textile workers.

• Feria Artesanal: the craft market selling woollen ponchos, sweaters, and blankets.

• Fábrica de Dulces: several traditional sweet factories offer free tastings.

• Textile shopping: the town is the best place in Chile for high-quality woollen ponchos and blankets.

• Sweet tasting: try the alfajores, membrillo (quince paste), and dulce de leche.

• Restaurante La Ligua (mid-range): Chilean food. Mains CLP 6,000–11,000.
• Cocinería El Mercado (budget): empanadas. Mains CLP 3,000–5,000.

Tap water is safe to drink. There are a few simple bars and cafés on the main square.

• Budget: Hostal La Ligua (shared CLP 10,000).
• Mid-range: Hotel Textil (private CLP 30,000–45,000).

• Mercado local: a small market selling fresh produce and basic goods.
• Almacenes de la plaza: grocery stores for daily needs.

• Petorca (30 km northeast, 30 min): rural valley.
• Quillota (60 km south, 50 min): historic city.
• Valparaíso (80 km south, 1.25 hr): port city.
• Los Vilos (80 km north, 1.25 hr): coastal town.
