Los Lagos is a region in southern Chile stretching from the shores of Llanquihue Lake to the remote fjords of Palena, encompassing some of the country's most iconic lake-and-volcano landscapes. The region is defined by its water — the vast Llanquihue Lake with the perfect cone of Volcán Osorno reflected on its surface, the countless rivers and fjords that carve through ancient temperate rainforest, and the Chiloé Archipelago with its stilted wooden churches and distinctive island culture. The northern half of the region is Chile's celebrated lake district: neat German-colonial towns, ski resorts, hot springs, and fly-fishing rivers. The southern half transitions into wilder Patagonian territory — the Carretera Austral begins at Puerto Montt, and the fjords and volcanic ranges of Palena feel genuinely remote.
The economy is anchored by fishing and salmon aquaculture, forestry, and cattle farming, with tourism a growing force — particularly around Puerto Varas, Frutillar, and the Chiloé Archipelago. Monte Verde, near Puerto Montt, is one of the oldest known archaeological sites in the Americas, pushing back the timeline of human settlement in the continent.
The region has a strong Huilliche indigenous heritage predating Spanish colonisation. The Spanish crown settled Chiloé in 1567, while the mainland was only gradually colonised from the late 18th century onward. In the 1850s, German settlers were recruited by the Chilean state to colonise the shores of Llanquihue Lake, and their architectural and cultural legacy is still visible in towns like Puerto Varas and Frutillar.
When to Visit
The best months are October through March (spring and summer), when temperatures are mild (15–25°C), days are long, and the lake district is at its most accessible. January and February are peak season — expect higher prices and more visitors, especially around Puerto Varas and Frutillar. The Fiesta de la Cerveza (Beer Festival) in Valdivia and Semana Musical de Frutillar (Frutillar Music Week) draw significant crowds in January–February.
Autumn (April–May) brings spectacular foliage and fewer tourists, but rain increases. Winter (June–September) is cool and wet, but draws skiers to resorts near Volcán Osorno and hot springs enthusiasts throughout the region. The weather is notoriously changeable year-round — rain gear is essential regardless of season. Chiloé is particularly wet and windy, with the driest months being January and February.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Puerto Montt is the regional hub. El Tepual Airport (PMC) lies west of the city, with flights from Santiago (approximately 1.5 hours). Cañal Bajo Carlos Hott Siebert Airport (ZOS) east of Osorno serves the northern part of the region. The Cardenal Antonio Samoré Pass on Route 215 connects Osorno to Argentina.
The main road corridors are:
- Ruta 5 (Panamericana) — runs north–south from the Pilmaiquén River (San Pablo) through Osorno and Puerto Montt, interrupted by the Chacao Channel crossing to Chiloé.
- Carretera Austral (Ruta 7) — begins in Puerto Montt, connecting to Chaitén and continuing south into Aysén. Ferry crossings are required at several points.
- Route 215 — Osorno to Puyehue and the Argentine border at Cardenal Samoré Pass.
Buses connect all major towns. Puerto Montt is the main long-distance bus terminal. Within the lake district, local buses and colectivos (shared taxis) link Puerto Varas, Frutillar, Llanquihue, and Puerto Octay. Ferries operate across the Chacao Channel to Chiloé and from Hornopirén southward along the fjords.

WhatsAppCuisine
The gastronomy of Los Lagos is deeply tied to fishing, agriculture, and livestock, enriched by the German colonial heritage and the indigenous Huilliche and Chono food traditions of Chiloé.
The signature dish is curanto en hoyo — a pit-cooked feast of shellfish, meats, potatoes, and sausage layered over hot stones and covered with pangue (nalca) leaves and earth. Originally from Chiloé, it is found throughout the region. Milcao is a traditional potato bread made from grated raw potato and cooked potato dough, often served alongside curanto. Cancato is roasted fish, typically salmon or congrio, stuffed with onions, tomatoes, and cheese. Chochoca is grated raw potato squeezed and mixed with cooked potatoes, then fire-roasted into a flatbread.
Other regional specialties include cazuela chilota (Chiloé-style stew with potatoes and meat), tortilla de papa (potato omelette), pan con chicharrones (bread with pork cracklings), and mazamorra de manzana (apple pudding). German influence shows in kuchen (fruit flan-cakes), strudel, and local craft beers. The region's salmon farms also supply much of Chile's fresh salmon.
Culture & Festivals
Semana Musical de Frutillar (January) — a prestigious classical music festival held in the lakeside Teatro del Lago, drawing international performers and audiences.
Fiesta de la Cerveza in Valdivia (February) — while technically in the Los Ríos region, it draws many Los Lagos visitors and is part of the broader southern Chilean cultural calendar.
Minga de tiradura de casas on Chiloé — an extraordinary communal tradition where an entire house is moved by oxen across land or water, accompanied by feasting and celebration. Dates vary as it is event-driven.
Palafito culture — the stilted houses of Castro and Gamboa are architectural icons of Chiloé, now increasingly restored as hotels and restaurants.
Chiloé mythology — the archipelago has one of South America's richest folkloric traditions, with legends of the Trauco (a forest dwarf), the Pincoya (a sea maiden), and the Caleuche (a ghost ship).
Wooden churches of Chiloé — over 150 churches built without nails in the Jesuit mission style, 16 of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, scattered across the archipelago.
