Kanem

Kanem is a province in western Chad, historically the heart of the Kanem Empire, one of the oldest and most powerful states in Sahelian Africa. The province lies north of Lake Chad in a semi-desert landscape of sandy plains, acacia scrub, and seasonal wadis. Its history as a crossroads of trans-Saharan trade routes has left a legacy of ancient fortified villages and Islamic scholarship.

The provincial capital is Mao. The population is primarily Kanembu, with Toubou herders in the north. Kanem is remote and receives few tourists, but its historical sites and desert landscapes hold significant interest.

November to February is the most comfortable period. The rainy season (June–September) is minimal but can affect tracks.

4×4 is essential for exploring Kanem. The main track runs between Mao and Moussoro. Fuel is scarce outside Mao.
