Overview

Ennedi-Est is a province in north-eastern Chad, created in 2012 when the former Ennedi region was split into eastern and western halves. It encompasses the eastern part of the Ennedi Plateau, a spectacular sandstone massif carved by millennia of wind and water into a labyrinth of canyons, natural arches, and rock formations. The plateau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Sahara's most visually striking landscapes, home to ancient rock art, hidden gueltas (rock pools), and some of the world's largest natural arches.

The provincial capital is Amdjarass. The population is predominantly Toubou, with nomadic herding as the traditional way of life. Ennedi-Est is extremely remote, with minimal infrastructure, but its geological wonders reward the adventurous traveller.

When to Visit

November to February is the ideal season, with manageable daytime temperatures and cold nights. March to October is brutally hot. Flash floods can occur after rare rains.
