Situated on the northwest shore of its namesake bay, it is a long-standing picturesque tourist destination.

Mahone Bay is about 85 km (53 mi) southwest of Halifax, the most efficient way to reach Mahone Bay is by car; it can be accessed from Highway 103 from exits 10 and 11. Rental cars are available at the Halifax International Airport.

Mahone Bay is best explored on foot if staying in the town centre, though a car is useful for reaching attractions in the surrounding area. Local taxi services may be available. Cycling is a popular option in warmer months, with scenic routes connecting nearby points of interest.
