Overview

West is a region in the Western High Plateau of Cameroon, the heartland of the Bamileke and Bamoun peoples. The capital is Bafoussam. The region is known for its traditional palaces, art, and festivals.

When to Visit

The West Region's high-altitude plateau (1,500–2,500 m) gives it a cooler, more comfortable climate than lowland Cameroon, but it still follows a distinct two-rainy-season pattern. Peak season runs from November through February — the long dry spell brings clear skies, warm days, cool nights, and dry roads ideal for visiting Bafoussam's markets and the traditional Bamileke and Bamoun palaces. Shoulder seasons are March–April and July–August, when brief dry spells punctuate the rains; July–August's minor dry period is surprisingly pleasant and sees fewer visitors. The off-season is April–June, the heaviest rains, when unpaved roads turn to mud and overcast skies dampen travel plans. The best time to visit is November to January, when the Bamoun Sultan's Annual Festival (Ngadon) in nearby Foumban offers a spectacular window into Bamoun court culture — plan ahead as accommodations fill quickly.
