Overview

South is the southernmost region of Cameroon, bordering Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Congo. The capital is Ebolowa. The region has a dense equatorial forest and includes the Dja Faunal Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

When to Visit

South Region has an equatorial climate with two rainy seasons and two dry spells. Peak season is December to February — the long dry period brings less rain, cooler evenings thanks to the harmattan breeze, and the most passable roads through the forest; this is the best time to visit, especially for trekking in the Dja Faunal Reserve. Shoulder seasons are July to August (a short dry break with lighter crowds and moderate prices) and March or November (transitional months with increasing or tapering rain but still manageable for travel). Off season runs from April to June and September to October, when the heaviest rains make unpaved roads muddy or impassable, humidity is intense, and malaria risk peaks — these months are best avoided for non-essential trips. If timing your visit around local culture, the annual Fête des Tam-Tams in Ebolowa celebrates traditional dance and music and is worth catching if it falls within your window.
