Dalgopol

Varna, Bulgaria

Why visit Dalgopol?

Dalgopol is a town in northeastern Bulgaria's Varna Province and the administrative centre of Dalgopol Municipality, which occupies the province's southwestern corner. It lies about 70 km west of the provincial capital, Varna, near the Tsonevo Reservoir in the eastern part of the Varbitsa Balkan hills — inland hill country rather than the Black Sea coast the province is best known for. As of a December 2009 count, the town had a population of 4,829. Dalgopol Glacier on Smith Island in the South Shetland Islands is named after the town, a naming quirk reflecting Bulgaria's participation in Antarctic place-naming rather than any local landmark. As an inland municipal centre, Dalgopol functions mainly as a market and administrative town for the surrounding rural area rather than as a tourist destination in its own right.
