Why visit?

Piauí is a state in Brazil's Northeast Region, bounded by Maranhão, Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, and Tocantins. It features the shortest Atlantic coastline of any Brazilian coastal state at 66 kilometers, while its interior extends across semi-arid caatinga scrublands, sandstone plateaus, and river valleys along the Parnaíba basin. The capital, Teresina, sits 340 kilometers inland and is the only state capital in the Northeast located away from the ocean.

Travelers visit Piauí primarily for two distinct regions: the coastal north and the archaeological south. In the north, the Parnaíba Delta spreads across dozens of islands and mangrove channels before reaching Atlantic beaches like Barra Grande, a major kitesurfing hub. In the southern interior, Serra da Capivara National Park protects thousands of prehistoric rock paintings and excavation sites that have expanded scientific understanding of early human settlement in the Americas.

The climate across Piauí is hot year-round. The southern and central interior experiences dry heat with high daytime temperatures, while the northern coast receives steady trade winds. The regional economy and food traditions center on cashew production, cattle ranching, river fishing, and crab harvesting along the mangrove estuaries.

When is the best time to visit?

The most practical window to visit Piauí is during the dry season from June to September. During these months, rainfall is minimal, dirt access roads in national parks remain passable, and humidity is lower.

In Teresina and the central interior, daytime temperatures consistently reach 34°C to 39°C (93°F to 102°F). The hottest period, known locally as "B-R-O-Bró" (September through December), regularly records temperatures above 40°C (104°F) alongside intense electrical storms before the rains begin. The rainy season runs from January through May, peaking in March and April with heavy downpours.

On the coast (Parnaíba, Luís Correia, Barra Grande), temperatures stay between 28°C and 32°C (82°F and 90°F) throughout the year. Kitesurfers should plan trips between July and December, when trade winds blow consistently between 20 and 30 knots.

Transport

  • By Air: The primary gateway is Teresina–Senador Petrônio Portella Airport (IATA: THE), situated 3 km north of central Teresina. LATAM, Gol, and Azul operate daily direct flights to Brasília (BSB, 2h 15m), São Paulo (GRU/CGH, 3h 15m), Belo Horizonte (CNF, 2h 30m), and Fortaleza (FOR, 1h 10m). In the north, Parnaíba–Prefeito Dr. João Silva Filho International Airport (IATA: PHB) receives regional Azul flights from Belo Horizonte and Campinas. For Serra da Capivara, São Raimundo Nonato Airport (IATA: NSR) currently has no regular commercial flight schedule, so travelers fly into Teresina (530 km away) or Petrolina (PNZ in Pernambuco, 310 km away) and proceed by road.
  • By Bus: Long-distance coaches link all major cities. Expresso Guanabara operates multiple daily services from Teresina to Parnaíba (5.5 to 7 hours, R$ 90–120 / $16–$22 USD) and to São Raimundo Nonato (8 to 9 hours, R$ 130–160 / $24–$29 USD). Regional lines include Viação Porto Rico and JL Expresso. Interstate routes connect Teresina with Fortaleza (9 to 11 hours, R$ 140–190 / $25–$35 USD) and São Luís (8 to 10 hours, R$ 120–160 / $22–$29 USD).
  • By Car: Federal highway BR-343 connects Teresina northeast to Piripiri (160 km, 2.5 hours) and Parnaíba (340 km, 5 hours). Highway BR-316 runs east toward Picos (310 km, 4.5 hours). To reach Serra da Capivara from Teresina, follow BR-316 to BR-230 and PI-140 south to São Raimundo Nonato (530 km, 7 to 8 hours). From Petrolina (Pernambuco), take BR-235 and BR-020 northwest to São Raimundo Nonato (310 km, 4.5 hours). On the coast, PI-116 and BR-402 connect Parnaíba to Luís Correia (15 km, 20 minutes) and Barra Grande (65 km, 1 hour 15 minutes).
  • By Train: No intercity passenger train service operates in Piauí. Teresina operates an urban diesel light rail system (Metrô de Teresina) covering 13.5 km between downtown and the southeastern suburbs, but it does not run outside the city.
  • Getting Around: In Teresina and Parnaíba, ride-hailing apps (Uber and 99) operate regularly, with typical urban trips costing R$ 10–25 ($2–$4.50 USD). Municipal city buses charge R$ 4.00–4.50 ($0.75–$0.85 USD) per ride. In smaller interior towns like São Raimundo Nonato, Piripiri, and Pedro II, mototaxis and standard street taxis provide the main transit (mototaxi rides cost R$ 7–15 / $1.30–$2.75 USD). For national parks, renting a car or booking a guided 4x4 vehicle is required.
